Let's play a little game here. I'm going to post 3 questions. Search your memory and answer these questions. Don't Google your answers or why I'm asking these questions. I will return after some posts to discuss this. This has no political connection, FYI.

    1. How did Nelson Mandela die, where and when (roughly)?
    2. Does the Monopoly board game "rich man" character wear a monocle?
    3. Did the Fruit of the Loom company logo ever have the fruit sitting on a cornucopia?

I find it bizzare people think Mandela died in prison during the 80s. Not sure how that's even possible to "remember. "

I never thought that, but I could see how people thought he would never get out alive and associated that with basically being "dead"...

The other two, like @exiledgator, I'm very much "Mandela affected" by...

I guess that could explain it but I was in grammar school when I was learning about Mandela and apartheid which resonated with me. When he was freed it was a significant moment for the world. Again, hard to believe anyone could forget that but maybe some were resigned to the idea that he would never be freed and then lost touch with current events

Did “people” actually remember Nelson Mandela” dying in prison? The person who came up with the phrase “Mandela Effect” was a paranormal researcher who just claimed that she remembered it. I’ve never heard anyone else saying they remember it. The false memory that lots of people have that false memory is known as The Mandela effect effect.

Yeah, that's a good point. I don't remember him being put in prison but I do remember him being freed, so that probably affects me more. An older person who remembered him being free in the beginning, but then "dissapearing", might be more likely to think he died.

I love how almost every reply just ignored the way I tried to set this thread up to make it more interesting and did their own thing.

This ended up being about psychology but not as I intended.

    Anyway...

    1. He died in 2013. Some people have vivid memories of him dying in prison in the 80s.
    2. Monopoly man never had a monocle.
    3. FoTL's logo never had a cornucopia, just fruit.

There are many more of these types of examples. I think some are fairly easily explained. Other's aren't. Conspiracy theorists think it has something to do with parallel universes. There are plenty of videos and posts out there if you want to search for enjoyment.

On 2 and 3 there apparently have been depictions out there of the incorrect scenario.

I know Mandela didn't die in prison in the 80s because he died the same year Hollywood released a movie based on his life.

He was a great peacemaker who helped bring about a peaceful transition in circumstances where that doesn't usually happen, along with FW. DeClerk and Archbishop Tutu.

    Don't mean to bug ya.

What I do remember is, after he was released, his wife was jailed, presumably because she wasn't what we (and maybe even he) all thought she was.

Or is this the Mandela effect? I guess if he did the deed, then it is the Mandela effect no matter what.

I'm not sure how legit that explanation is. For example, the monopoly man running with a bag of cash, from your Quora link, with a monocle, appears to be this image, that someone drew a monocle on.

sort of…. A lot of the “incorrect depictions” that are out there seem to be from people who have drawn the logos the way they remember them after hearing about the Mandela affect … there are some internet quizzes that show logos in different ways to see how you remember them, for example. So I dont think most of the incorrect depictions predate the idea of the “Mandela effect”, so you can’t really say the incorrect depictions caused it, but at this point they may be clouding people’s memories even more…
