small set of islands off the N coast of Scotland has been disconnected from the modern world when the undersea cable providing communication to the islands has been cut. That happened less than a week after the cable from the Faroe islands to Shetland Islands had also been severed. It seems highly unlikely that the two undersea cables, hundreds of miles apart, would both be cut within a week. Makes me wonder what/who is on the Faroe or Shetland Islands that someone wanted them to be disconnected and who would do this. Remote islands off the coast of Scotland mysteriously lost all phone and internet connection after an undersea cable was cut (msn.com) A remote set of islands off the cost of Scotland was mysteriously cut off from the outside world on Thursday, with phones and internet connections not working after damage to an undersea cable. Local police on the Shetland Islands said that there was a "complete outage" in the islands and that "phones, internet and computers are not usable." ...................... The outage came after an another undersea cable to Shetland, connecting it to the still-more-remote Faroe Island, was also damaged, the BBC reported.
There are always satellite phones. Are satellite phones still a thing? About 20 or so years ago I took my boat to the Bahamas and a hurricane stranded us in Bimini. We couldn't even call our wives to tell them we were OK. Some guy in about a 90 ft yacht was at the dock talking on a Satellite phone and I asked to borrow it. I asked him if I could borrow it and he said yes but only for a minute because time on it was expensive. I'm thinking "You dick, here you are in a multi million dollar boat and you are worried about phone minutes." I think his name was Trump or something like that. LOL not really. Trump probably would have charged me for the use.
yes, you can even put an app on your cell phone to convert it to satellite phone. I know someone who does this when they have long range transits moving boats Satellite Phones: Turn Your Smartphone Into A Satellite Phone With The Thuraya SatSleeve+ (outfittersatellite.com)
Only to then withdraw Starlink and tell them they should accept Russian dominion. Seriously, are there any working theories on what did this?
Maybe someone that's recently demonstrated some good covert underwater skills, still has those assets in the area, and is looking to either just FSU, or send a message. Or both.
If that happens, Musk will need to stay the course. If he reneges, at any point, Shetland Islands will place him on a hit list.
like the kind of underwater skills required to blow up a large natural gas pipeline or two? I wonder if the true nature of the "accident" that cut these cables will ever be known. Could this be a rogue actor trying to blackmail countries?
This was from an article over a year ago. Putin spy ship above UK internet cables as its feared they could be cut
That makes a lot of sense. In the fictional “2034”, imagining a US Sino War, the Russians take advantage of cut all the cables linking the US and Europe. Apparently that’s a thing that can be done, although it could not have occurred in normal times, at least according to the author, a retired admiral, without being detected and intercepted by the US Navy because it’s time consuming and easy to detect.etc.
it would seem that if one were to set timed explosive charges they could cut them all simultaneously long after the sub or ship left the area
Don't know. Just reminded me of that book. A big point was made that it could not occur if our Navy was not bogged down (and getting wiped out) in the Pacific because it was so easy to detect and interdict
