Bama has shown too that they dont care about how many 4 and 5* kids they have that are upperclassmen; if you can play, you WILL play. Tim Smith was getting valuable snaps as a true freshmen

They still have a good chance to play for us if we sign them...

Will Bama have better players to fight then for playing time than we do or will have after this 2023 class is all singed and on both teams? I haven really seen who Bama has coming in on their D-line.

Who has figured it out? UK? Missouri? I think the 3-4 is more conducive to stopping the spread. Issue is. You need a good NT that can hold his own and there’s not many of those in college football.

Nope... give me four true defensive tackles on the D-line and we stop the run and pressure the QBs.. We have had some of the very best defense in the past that stopped teams like Oklahoma's high powered passing attack with that 4-3 base defense.

That win and the other Natty's we won were with a 4-3 base defenses, and it will stop current offenses like the one that Tennessee is running. Tennessee is running a similar offense that Tebow an company beat in 2008... with a 4-3 base defense.

This is nonsense. What do you think Georgia generally has on their D-line? It sure as hell isn't 4 true DTs, and they have had the best defenses in the country lately.

We won 3 National Championships with that 4-3 base defense... Tell me that was nonsense. And you can call them nose tackles or nose guards for all I care. But we need 4 big-nasties on that line as the base of the line.

    Couple things...
    1. a 4-3 does not have 4 true defensive tackles.
    2. i never said a 4-3 was bad. I actually prefer it.
    3. Georgia won a national championship 10 months ago without a 4-3 base.
    4. Something working 14, 16, and 26 years ago doesn't mean it's automatically going to work now.

Tennessee is running almost the same offense that Oklahoma ran in 2008... And whatever you think about the 3-3-5 defense that Toney is running will not work without all pro NFL talent. Not in the SEC. This is a LINE OF SCRIMMAGE LEAGUE if you haven't noticed. And Sunbelt defenses are obsolete. Especially the 3-3-5 crap that we're currently running.

We need 4 true defensive lineman in that line for a base. And like I said before, you can call them whatever you want to call them.

One more thing. Thank you for mentioning UGA because if you have been watching them then you noticed that sometimes they line up with 6 O-lineman and 2 NFL quality tight ends... And you think that one true nose guard, or nose tackle, and two rushing ends with 3 linebackers are going to get to their QB in this century?

    That's just dumb...

If you don't even know what the positions are called, then why would your opinion about what will or won't work be remotely relevant? 4 true defensive tackles? Call them nose guards or nose tackles? So what, we just don't have any edge rushers? No SSDE?

Yeah, so 15 years go that some college teams are switching back to it..

Colorado is switching to a 4-3 base defense, here’s what that means

Strong Points of the 4-3 Defense
The 4-3 is a more conservative defense, but that’s not always a bad thing. In the 4-3, the linebackers play more behind the line, and the team will rely on its four defensive linemen to get the job done upfront. This means stopping the run can potentially be more effective than with a 3-4 defense, as a 4-3 team utilizes two defensive tackles that shift and stunt to confuse the offensive linemen’s blocking.

If defensive tackles in the 4-3 can make plays against the run that’s great, but many 4-3 defenses are set up to allow the middle linebacker to make tackles. The middle linebacker must be very smart in this defense, and his reads must be spot on. He needs to have the size and power to stop a running back dead in the hole, and the speed to range from sideline to sideline.

The 4-3 defense can be effective against the passing game, as long as a team has a good defensive line. Whereas in the 3-4 defense a team will usually need to blitz at least one linebacker to get pressure on the quarterback, a 4-3 team can leave that job up to the defensive line and assign the linebackers elsewhere. This leaves options like the famed Tampa-2 coverage available, with 2-deep and the middle linebacker covering down the middle of the field.

All four defensive linemen must be good pass rushers, especially the defensive ends who are usually much smaller and quicker than their counterparts in the 3-4. A 4-3 team that can get pressure on the quarterback using only the four down linemen is a nightmare for offensive coordinators.

Yeah, maybe that's why they are switching back to a 4-3 or a 4-2-5 base defense.

    Is Alabama A 3/4 Defense?
    By Kristine Cummings / August 15, 2022

Traditionally known as a 3-4 coach, Saban and his Alabama defensive staff had adapted to the spread era. Against Ohio State’s spread set, Alabama will likely primarily play a 4-2-5, with the nickel (what Saban calls the ‘Star’) going to the passing strength.

The 3-3-5 takes certain skilled players and very complicated to learn properly. Our players, especially our DBs and Safeties are often confused and missing assignments... giving up TDs.

Our defensive problems comes from one thing. Lack of talent!

I don’t think it’s that easy to explain but talent is definitely a major if not the biggest issue. For sure.

Obvious to me also because you couldn't take a talented group and make them this bad no matter how hard you tried.

But I also have some issues with the last staff not helping players improve and in some cases possibly doing harm.

We had 5 weeks to prepare for the 2008 game and phenomenal defensive coaches and players. We are the only school OU played that year that wasn’t torched

this doesn’t bolster your argument. Wrt to base defense 4 down linemen this year isn’t our problem it’s how we play situational football in 3rd down. The fact that we get our opponent into 3rd - 6+ shows we are sound on early downs repeatedly.
We need situational subs on 3rd down and a more aggressive philosophy on the back end when we take a player off the field for extra rushers
