... if they violate the Stop Woke law, or the "Don't Say Gay" law. There is so much wrong with this. A solution to a non existent problem Strictly political posturing as teachers only teach the curriculum they are given. Vague law - prohibits teachers from "intentionally" violating the law. Define intentionally. Tying their hands when it comes to teaching history without any clear and concise guidelines - again vague. Are the voucher schools going to be monitored, or will they get a pass like they do when it comes to uniform testing to make sure the kids are being actually taught the three "R"s? Meeting was held at 9am when 99% of teachers are at work. Library censorship with no real outline of how to include everyone's interests More stress on teachers, so more will leave amidst an already existent teacher shortage in Florida. This is all fueled by so called "Christians" where again we are moving in a disturbing direction. Control what public schools can teach children regardless of what the rest of the populous wants. It is seriously getting weirder by the day down here. From the article: The state’s new Parental Rights in Education Law, the one opponents call “don’t say gay,” prevents instruction in sexual orientation or gender identity in kindergarten through third grade. The new Individual Freedom law, the one DeSantis dubbed his “anti-woke” measure, prohibits teaching that anyone of one race is responsible for past acts committed by someone of that same race, among other prohibitions. The new rule bars teachers from “intentionally” providing instruction the laws forbid. If they do, they could face “revocation or suspension” of their license to teach. Critics said the rule unfairly attacks gay and transgender people by suggesting they aim to sexualize children and makes it hard for teachers who want to be accepting of students who live in families with same-sex parents. “With rules like this, you’re going after public school teachers, accusing us of perpetrating some socialist elitist agenda,” said Carmela DeToma, a 30-year veteran who teaches at Colonial High School in Orange County. “This is just a tired old tactic of creating a problem where there is none.” Florida teachers could lose licenses for defying ‘don’t say gay,’ ‘anti-woke’ laws
"Woke" should be a good thing. But we never really change, or at least very slowly, with intermittent reactionary counters
So teaching curriculum is some how "political posturing" in your opinion? When I was growing up we had so much content in real learning (curriculum only) that I never even thought of a teacher interjecting their opinion of social matters in school. Things have changed. I think many teachers need these guidelines to get back to curriculum teaching. Social (engineering) teaching is pure propaganda... and it is definitely political in my opinion. Any law that gets teachers back to the books and pure curriculum is a good thing. We do NOT need teachers sexualizing or propagandizing our kids in school for their own desired outcome. School is not a "playground" for teachers' social experimentation on our children.
And there are folks out there that see Desantis as presidential material. I will likely never vote for another Republican until they get this "hate filled agenda" out of their systems.
Rick, this isn't happening. That's the issue. Trust me, my DIL doesn't have time to change or mess around with the curriculum. She became a teacher to make a difference in children's lives, every child's life. The problem with a vague law with strong consequences is that it adds chaos to the stress FL teachers are already under.
One persons idea of hate is another persons idea of common sense. Teachers need to avoid socializing our kids in the progressive agenda. Please don’t say teachers don’t try to influence kids towards libbieism….public education is rife with libbies who know best.
It’s not the curriculum so much as it is the interpretation and bias many educators hold. There is no doubt about it….libbie teachers love to preach their beliefs onto our children. My kids used to tell us about all the teachers who would ridicule Trump at school. Cannot wait to get my other kids out of public school.
Been awhile since I was in school, but in my public high school I had an LMS teacher who was openly pro-life, and I remember her talking about abortion in class. I had a history teacher who said the best thing JFK did was take a bullet. He really disliked Democrats. Their conservative beliefs were apparent, but I don't recall anyone making an issue of it I guess because it was a conservative area. I don't recall any teacher espousing liberal beliefs and suspect that would have gotten a different reaction. I do think that kind of blatant partisanship is not professional regardless of which side it comes from. Having said that, the fear and outrage about public school teachers grooming kids doesn't seem to be based upon any data or evidence that I've seen - at least in Florida. We have seen quite a few teachers get caught actually having sex with (statutorily raping) students. Of course no one supports that, but the anger about gay and transgender issues is so elevated I think because people fear their kids being told that homosexuality is okay, contradicting their parents religious teachings. Or worse, that teachers might actually turn their kid gay. But gay and lesbian people can now marry. The government isn't supposed to discriminate against them. A teacher talking about that isn't the same thing as asking kids to try it out.
I wish I could say I trust the teachers today to use sound judgment and objectivity. I’ll also add that your writing style leads me to believe that you, even as a libbie, would make an excellent educator. You are adept at thinking through both sides of an issue and rarely use inflammatory language. I don’t think even 50% of teachers have the professional abilities necessary to direct and lead our children. Lastly, politics is heated more than in any time in the recent past as far as I can tell. That combined with social media has everyone wanting to share their political opinions. Libbies own education and the media and now they own the bully pulpit. The Florida governor is taking the natural precautions against the libbie progressive snowballing movement. You guys honestly can’t be surprised.
If you dont trust other people to educate your children, do it yourself. Why punish ordinary people because of your paranoia?
I’ll eventually get all my children into a private school. Thanks again for your ill-informed parental advice.
I experienced it first hand. Public school teachers, bless their hearts, aren’t exactly all masters of classroom management. Tough job indeed. I’m not knocking them, you definitely get what you pay for. Govt teachers are often just part of the bureaucratic red tape.
Where o where did all these enlightened masters of social needs come from. When I attended high school in the 70's my Civics and Political History class had an ex Army Veteran as our teacher. He pushed pro Republican and pro war ideologies often which shockingly led to many classroom discussions where pro and con issues were discussed. So, if by your standards teachers held a magic wand to force students towards their agenda, why am I not an lost MAGA soul. He only reaffirmed my original beliefs! Just like immigration, border wall etc Republicans are seriously wrong and spend to much time on ignorant beliefs. I don't want my kids teachers restricted in discussions! if they need support in what they do in school then Mom and Dad are their to clarify. Our kids will be fully confident and prepared to be successful in a world that requires conversation.
Fine, but you say most teachers cant do the job, but then tell me you are going to have your kids taught by teachers. Seems a little contradictory to me. Or perhaps you are just full of crap.
Perhaps you as a government lover cannot comprehend my point. My kids will soon leave the govt schools behind. Looks like you had a garbled reply without first digesting my post.
I think your post is mostly on point. I believe todays schooling has changed due to hyper-politics and division from social media. I don’t like my children feeling bullied or ostracized by teachers who can’t contain their hate for conservatives.
