“Talent” What does the term entail ?

I think Toney likes the 3-4. We are still rushing 4, but one of those guys is an OLB. I would guess it’s to disguise who’s dropping and who’s rushing and easier to recruit for.

 

We do need quality depth, that should be self evident to anyone watching our team play.

 

Steve Spurrier knows what's up... Having said that, even if it is a scheme issue more talent is always good. And we could use more talented players on both sides of the ball.

 

I would rather have a scheme that elevates the talent on hand, than the talent we wish we had. The problem with the idea that talent will make this scheme better, is that the teams we need to beat will have the same/greater talent and the holes in this scheme will still be exploited.

An example is the Grantham defenses pre-2020. On paper, those defenses were some of the best in the nation. In practice, the secondary was a weakness that good QBs exploited. When we needed a stop against the good teams on our schedule, we couldn’t do it.

 

Correct. GNFP put out his breakdown of our defense versus LSU yesterday. One of the plays he diagrammed showed us crowding the LOS and rushing 4-5 while dropping Summerall into coverage, and there was no way that Summerall could make it out there to cover his man in time.

LSU ran a quick passing game, and with the cushion our defense plays with there was no way to get to the QB in time. On one play Cox blew up his man and made it to the QB in 2-3 seconds, and the result was an incomplete pass because the cushion we play with left the quick pass wide open.

 

He's a 3 year DC with zero previous SEC experience as a DC... He can take a hike with that failed 3-4 base BS..

 

the team is not losing because of lack of talent. If you look at the history of the NFL draft more 3-star players are drafted in the 1st round than 4 or 5-star players. This is a lack of development problem. These players need to be developed, coached, and put into a scheme that actually works!

 

Just remember this is the guy who fired himself for a lack of performance. It is different having some insight and making things work. This isn't 1990s SEC football anymore. And Galen Hall didn't give us some nice pieces to work with this year.

 

All of you have researched way more than I will. IMO it’s important to note that we had 2 years of pretty miserable D under Mullen and Grantham’s watch. Such that TG got fired mid season. One year was the worst statistically in the history of the program right?

So I think it’s safe to say that any “talent” we have left from that regime (several are gone) was not properly developed then. New coaches and schemes - it’s not going to fix itself overnight.

All that said I get it - we would like to think we are talented enough that the coaches can figure out how to put these kids in better situations.

Hopefully the bye week is just what we need to do that. Remember how bad Leak was doing in the new Meyer scheme and they changed things up in bye week and next thing you know Leak is doing really well, O picked up and the next year he wins a NC.

Not saying I expect that sort of turn around. But a bye week certainly gives much more opportunity to change schemes, wrinkles etc and get them implemented and rep’d so all players are comfortable.

Yes to full strength in the offensive side of the ball.

Utah had their TE, Uk had their QB, Ut wasn’t missing any offensive players I’m aware of mizz got their RB back, and LSU also I believe had all their skill players.

Omit Utah from extra motivation, mizz always plays hard their motivation maybe not be from past contests, LSU definitely is taking on a more chippy atmosphere beyond the cross division rivalry

BN would never denigrate talent especially in public, remember talent is more than measurables in private among coaches there is the possibility of wispers

 

There aren't really any schematic gotcha's anymore (He was definitely one, the spread option QB was the last) and so you have to have horses. At least in the upper levels of college football. Otherwise, you are middling...or worse.

 

This can't be overstated and I would even disagree with the bolded part. Even with some in-state rivals, we are the more highly circled game. I bet if you asked the following teams who you would most like to beat each year, they would say us, Tenn., UGAG, UK, FSU, LSU and maybe even Mizzou. For now it seems like Vandy and S. Carolina haven't joined that group. Vandy is resigned to losing and S. Carolina has Clempson. The rest we don't play enough for them to come around to this attitude but I bet they would if we did play them.

 

Agree with everything except the motivation. Since joining the SEC, Mizzou is 5-6 against the Gators, so I don't see any motivation from getting pummeled or being mediocre, and LSU is 10-3 since 2010. They pretty much owns us.

 

For one, every game is on TV or streamed now. In the old days, you were lucky to get a regional broadcast if you went to a small school. That was an advantage that we could sell to recruits…exposure and your family can watch you play.

Along with that, players don’t mind leaving the state of Florida and the talent that SOS was able to attract without really “recruiting” (according to him) here is no longer an option. Seems like there’s so much more competition for Florida talent now than when Spurs was here.

I can go on, but the Fun and Gun was unique for its time and attracted a lot of speed and skilled players on both sides of the ball. Now everyone runs spread, air raid concepts and tempo offenses so that talent pool is spread out as well.

 

Yes, but this effects all teams the same. The offenses and defense might be a bit more sophisticated but not to the point where we have to rely on schemes that confuse our own players.

 

Well, @tegator80 ’s point was that Spurs wasn’t Spurs when he fired himself for non-performance because the college game has changed where the advantages that he had were no longer advantages.

We've had great defenses since SOS... 2006 and 2008 notably and those schemes never confuse our DBs and Safeties. We played against teams that had West Coast Offenses, and teams like Oklahoma that were prolific offensive juggernauts and still we never confused our DBs and Safeties...

We also never had a 3-4 or a 3-3-5 base defense that I can remember...not until Grantham came here and screwed that all up for the Gators football teams. All of our defensive troubles started with the 3-4 base defense. And that started with Grantham.
