These are top-10 rankings for every year since 2000 (data that was readily available) with an added comparison to first years for Spurrier/Meyer. Surprisingly, the offense is doing better than I thought. Since we're running so few plays, that was my primary focus. If you want to see some other summary statistic for that time period, let me know. Edit: I used points from the offense only, no special teams or defense points. iirc 2022 made the top 10 in points per game if I included special teams points.
We run motion on just about every offensive play which takes up quite of bit of clock time and defense is the worst in the nation in 3rd down conversion. Recipe for very low offensive opportunities. If we don’t turn the ball over we will be in every game.
It’s by design. Keep the offense on the field as long as possible to give the defense a rest and keep their offense on the field
Thanks for the historical context for Gator football. There are already some posting BNs offense isn’t fun to watch, there needs to be an acknowledgement of effectiveness. After 7 games there is a blueprint to defeat the offense and yet we continue to score points despite lacking an opportunity to get into the flow of the game because the defense can’t get off the field As an aside the game has changed dramatically since 1990. We were cutting edge for almost 20 years. The space she passed us by for large parts of the last decade. it appears we were victims of quick offensive strikes and the other team playing keep away. An additional column of defensive plays/game for the same years would be interesting
Setting aside the frustration of running up the middle for no gain, a few defensive stops and or turnovers and our record is much better. The O is not the weak link this year.
Or how about more 3 and outs for the defense..if we had more of those. We could be undefeated or at the very least,, 6-1, I know we would have beaten uk and lsu if the defense had more stops
good stuff, thanks iam4uf. the offense is doing well enough to win most of our games if we could get just average play out of the defense (or even slightly below average with more third down stops). might want to double check the date on SOS' first year, though
The offense is doing pretty well considering we have a TE playing QB and WRS on the talent level of Vanderbilt. The ship is not sinking. Our talent level is just not there. For us to make a leap next year we must 1. Recruit great and the play those freshman 2. We must land some studs through the portal or this defense is going to stink again next year. This is 90% a talent issue and 10% coaching. Coaches can be great but without talent it doesn't matter. See Saban's first year at Bama.
Other than the Kentucky game where Richardson went MIA, our offense has played good enough to win the rest of the games. Failure to stop Tennessee and LSU are the reason we are 4-3.
I thought that might as well, but check this out (BCF Toys - 2022 Yards Per Play). Percentages of non-garbage offensive drives that average at least four yards per play gained (O4+), at least seven yards per play gained (O7+), and at least ten yards per play gained (O10+). So a quarter of our plays over 4 yards are over 10 yards as well, so fewer big plays than it seems.
2008 was a strange year. I remember the Gator O hraving a lot of short fields due to a smothering defense, so not a lot of opportunities for yards. It was talked about on here that we weren't getting a lot of yards per game.
Football is all about big plays. There are 3, 4 yard runs....first down passes...tackle for loss and then BAM! Turnover or long gain. The game usually boils down to about 7-9 big plays and whichever team wins the majority of those wins the game. The other 80% is essentially a scrum.
