Good move. Those three counties literally have buildings completely wiped out and people have lost everything. I would imagine no matter what, turnout there will be really low.
DeSantis on voting. Even the arresting police were disturbed. Damned, to be sure Body-worn camera footage recorded by local police captured the confusion and outrage of Hillsborough County residents who found themselves in handcuffs for casting a ballot following investigations by Gov. Ron DeSantis’ new Office of Election Crimes and Security. The Aug. 18 arrests — conducted hours before DeSantis called a news conference to tout his crackdown on alleged voter fraud — were carried out by state police officers accompanied by local law enforcement. The recordings by Tampa police and Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputies reveal officers who were patient, understanding — almost apologetic. Even the Tampa police officer driving Patterson to the jail seemed surprised by the charges against him. En route, the officer received a phone call and appeared to briefly discuss Patterson’s case. “I’ve never seen these charges before in my entire life,” the officer said.
Good lord man. Almost the entire impact zone is red. He did 8t for the 3 hardest hit counties. Like I said, damned either way. Just made up nonsense.
Once again, defending the indefensible. "Is Central Florida still flooded?" That is a foolish question. Is Ft Myers Beach still flooded? No. Is Sanibel still flooded? No. Is Downtown Fort Myers still flooded? No. Flooding can absolutely displace residents for long periods of time, whether they live in Lee County or Orange County. We have a friend here in Lee County who lost her house and 2 cars to flooding. I'm sure there are many in Central Florida who suffered similar losses due to hurricane induced flooding. Face it, DeSantis politicizes EVERYTHING!!! If this isn't about politics, why did DeSantis deny Orange County's request??? You know damn well what his motive is. Orlando area sees catastrophic flooding due to Hurricane Ian
Drop boxes promote fraud on Blue counties and when they are expanded by executive order in a pandemic to minimize the disease transmission in a pandemic. And they are illegal where they violate the sacrosanct Legislative rules. But executive orders allowing them and expanded voting hours and times in violation of tikes rules are OK in Hurricane ravaged Red areas because they help people vote? Hypocrites. If the Dems had any cojones, they would sue to declare this non-legislatively approved executive order illegal. Worse they get is an order that helps them later. Because that is what the GOP did and has pushed— that laws passed by state legislatures are sacrosanct. And they argued this when they voted to reject votes form states on 1-6-20. Utter hypocrisy, no matter the need. Suddenly, in a red area, state laws don’t matter and ballot drops don’t promote fraud. Just spare us your hypocrisy. Fraud doesn’t depend on the need for remote or mail in voting.
Like I said, you're being dishonest. He wouldn't be damned if he had loosened the rules in all of the hard-hit counties, instead of just three Republican counties. How much harder was the city of Sarasota hit than certain parts of Orlando?
That would be such a bad decision. The focus here should be on helping more people, not hurting those who are being helped just because DeSantis is a disingenuous partisan hack.
in a sane world you are right and I would agree with you. But, this is politics and al a lot power. The 2000 Miles posters are coming out of the woodworks here to defend DeSantis. Either laws passed by state legislatures can’t changed or they can. Either drop boxes need to be limited to tor event fraud or they don’t.
Congrats you were able to find a news clip from 1 day after Ian hit Central FLorida that shows flooding along a river. Hell I had flooding in my back yard that left a sinkhole from a collapsed storm sewer pipe but it all started to drain as soon as the storm passed. I had water an inch from my back door and actually had a little water in my garage before it receded, but a few hours later it was all gone. That's the way it was throughout 99.9% of Central Florida.
Not all pols play these partisan games all the time. Did Biden play games with Florida and federal emergency aid? No. He didn't try to make DeSantis look bad, extort him, or refuse to help. DeSantis could have shown some leadership and class. Instead, he acted like Donald Trump, yet again.
I'm not sure if this is an act or if you genuinely don't get it. @rtgator literally just laid it out for you. The issue isn't the city still being under water. Just like the issue in Ft. Myers isn't the city still being under water. It's the damage done by the storm/flooding displacing people. God help you if you watched the videos of those completely flooded apartments and thought, "well, I'm sure things were fine the next day."
Sure it’s playing games but one that wont have any impact. People in those counties literally had their lives and poling places wiped out. And how many of them are really worried about voting anyway? Speaking of games does Biden think his loan forgiveness stunt is anything but pandering and vote buying?
I hope they can and do vote. Just like I would hope we'd make it easier for the other people whose lives were turned upside down by this hurricane to vote. It is crappy behavior, and it is not the sort of behavior that all pols engage in. Some actually choose to rise above partisan politics when disasters hit.
Too bad. The legislature in this state knows that Hurricanes can and do do just that. And it didn’t pass laws authorizing relaxation of their sacrosanct voting laws. In fact, after 2020, they restricted those laws and didn’t make an exception. So the legislature can be presumed conclusively to have balanced these concerns. If they want to change the precinct location to one that is accessible, fine with me. That is not in a statute. But, voting times and drop boxes are addressed already. Either we enforce our laws and prevent fraud or not. But let’s stop the hypocrisy about drop boxes or voting times when they become desires or to encourage GOP voting. Drop boxes or 2000 mules? Which is it? And on and on we can go
. Let these right wing DeSantis defenders make arguments the exact opposite of what they have been making about 2020. I want to read their smarmy nonsense because it is exactly what I have been saying: all their screaming about voter fraud etc and the evils of drop boxes, convenient voting, voting in your own precincts, mail on ballots etc is all about disenfranchisement. That’s all it is.
And my post 75 is a flawless legislative intent argument about disregarding state laws right before an election. Great thing about my job is that I can argue both sides of the case.
My post is not directed to him only. Plenty of other posters above who make the same arguments. I just enjoy pointing out the utter hypocrisy.
I don’t disagree with the premise here. Just noting it’s politics as usual and not likely to have any impact on the outcome of this election.
