Tommy, you bring up some good points but I differ on the scheme. ITS FLAT OUT NOT WORKING. It's the definition of insanity. How is allowing 3rd down conversion after 3rd down conversion acceptable in this scheme? How is only forcing 3 punts in 3 games acceptable in this scheme? How is allowing team after team eat clock acceptable scheme? Would you not agree this scheme is not working? 131st (last) in allowing teams to make 3rd downs? How is allowing a team 6 consecutive TDs an acceptable scheme? We keep hearing "we have work to do" and "its correctable" but the same scheme is introduced with the same pitiful results. Why do you allow the dbs to play 10 to 15 yards off the ball on a third and 10? Why is it that every qb we face has a Heisman type game against us? I agree we could use more talent, but any DC worth his salt would have already have made adjustments.
People complained about the teams under Mullen not playing together. We need the fans to have the same attitude we expect out of the team. People should read the following two articles, along with others like them, to realize where we are at and how Napier is leading us back. Billy Napier has a plan but are Florida fans willing to accept some growing pains in Year 1? Billy Napier teaching Florida fans a valuable lesson in patience - The Independent Florida Alligator
All I’m saying is we need a larger sample size. It seems like we are trying new stuff, but it’s not working. Let’s see what we do with this bye week. I’m not sold on Toney being the answer, I just see a ton of highly regarded defensive guys getting worked so I realize it’s more complicated than that. We may can mask our deficiencies by blitzing every down. We shall see.
I was going to point out when he posted that that 2008 was only 14 years ago but decided to stay out of the fray….
Specifically what makes you say there is a lot of promise in the next few years? Current recruits? The scheme we run? The fact BN coached under Saban? The magical process? The 50 analysts? Help me see what you see….
We've got problems for sure on the defensive side of the ball. I think it's cool to say that but to say we have coaching problems is premature. People say they're tired of waiting. I'm tired of our fan base talking out their arses. It may be true that we have a coaching problem but our jacked up dipchit fan base can't suffer a lose without poisoning the well. Its year one so let's see what happens before we start crying and screaming about firing coaches.
The main two things: 1. Recruiting - It's clear that we're recruiting on a different level than our previous couple of coaches. I would imagine it's only going to get better. 2. Our running game. BN said that we're going to go to a run oriented offense, and I think he's done a pretty good job of doing that. I would also imagine that it's only going to get better as well (can't wait to see ETN as a 3rd year back in this system! ) In my eyes BN has pretty much done everything he said he was going to do, although I don't recall him addressing what his plan was defensively. My only issue with the team right now is the D. I'm a little frustrated like everyone else that we haven't seen any improvement this season. I'll give BN the benefit of the doubt and see if he can correct it by the end of the season. If it doesn't get better, then I might start having a less optimistic view on things overall. I can't imagine BN doesn't have a plan for the D right now and is doing everything possible to correct it. That being said, if it doesn't get better by the end of the season, my expectations would be that a change is made. It wouldn't sit very well with Gator Nation to keep a DC on board after another bad(probably worse) year on that side of the football. As we all know, one of the biggest complaints of DM was that he kept TG on. If we don't improve on D, and BN keeps Toney as DC and we don't show drastic improvement in game 1 next year I can only imagine it will get quite noisy around here.
It’s not one loss this year that has people pissed. It was a crappy game plan on O for UK. It’s been terrible D vs USF and now LSU, and not because they had potent offenses, it’s guys literally out of position on many plays (UT has a good O but two TDs were directly due to one particular upper clansman being totally clueless.) It’s having the worst 3rddown conversion rate in all of D1 CFB giving up 3 and a mile(see mizzu and USF and LSU games)
But that 10% seems to be the loudest..(squeaky wheel gets the oil)so media etc pays more attention..it's hard to silence the " noise in the system "
I'm going to agree with the OP. The Gator record has gone almost as prognosticators have predicted. GN (myself included) has/have held unrealistic expectations in year one. We have mostly been viewing the results of HORRIBLE RECRUITING. I have seen some glaring mistakes by the coaching staff with time management and playcalling, but those don't explain the losses. Our offense is schizophrenic and our defense is pathetic! The offense functions as well as a first year starting quarterback. The defense has two senior LB's who often choose the wrong gaps in the run game and cannot pass cover RB's or tightends. Our DL cannot pass rush or stop the run. The safeties play out of position so much that fans are nearly bald. Our cornerbacks are difficult to analyze, because there is no pass rush! With LSU, Daniel's had too much time to throw. Let's be honest, our offensive and defensive talent has not been very good for awhile. Only two players on offense, from Napier's previous team, are an indication of Napier's recruiting and developing prowess. It's totally unfair for GN to blame the coaches for play on the field. I was hoping the defense would show improvement this year, but no enchilada. I fear we are a few years away from where we would like to see this team, and the 2023 recruiting class offers hope. GN must stay positive, because the media piranhas read the negative talk from fans on forums and report on it. If the recruits caught wind of the crap on here, I fear the negative impact it would have on recruiting. Sure, you have the right to be critical, but, in year one, is it reasonable? GN should be disappointed, but the blame lies with the three amigos for the negative impact on recruiting; so much so that a pipeline of recruits have left the state of Florida to play elsewhere! Now, in our best recruiting class in awhile, we continue to bitch and moan! I think most analysts are correct, Napier WILL NOT right the ship until he gets his players on the roster. I can only hope GN can be patient and endure the process! My 2 cents worth, Gator Nation!!!
And we are teaching him about what petulant adults look like. Now, he needs to get with the program and change my diaper. I have a boop.
This, they are in the portal for a reason. The diamonds in the rough are few and far between. There aren't Greenard's hanging on the trees to follow your Defensive Coordinator to your team.
So we are going to ridicule sunshine pumpers, then chastise the complainers. Let's try despondent and apathetic and see where that takes us.
People talking out of their asses are the folks that don't see a problem. I haven't seen one person say we should fire Napier. But the regressions on defense is obvious for anyone without cataracts. Maybe the "dipshit" comments should be directed in another direction.
Talk a bout a stretch. Hopper, our best defensive player? And last time I looked every team loses players every year. The only impact one would have been Elam. If you end up dead last in a defensive category because you lost 1 NFL guy, you certainly have coaching problems.
Well…you said it was essentially the same team and it was all coaching. I pointed out we lost quite a bit from last year’s team, which wasn’t exactly elite. That 2021 team gave up more points to LSU and couldn’t stop a counter play.
