A nice way of saying our safeties, LB, and D line are pooo therefore our DBs have to resort to extreme measures to ensure the WR stay in front of them lol

Soooo, the consensus seems to be that the previous staff recruited a bunch of guys that can’t be plugged in to ANY scheme and actually play winning defense in ?? Or that we’ve got a bunch of guys that collectively can’t package one scheme and play winning defense with ??? If THATS THE CASE, None of those former D Coaches should ever be able to get a job again if it involves recruiting. Good grief.

You're not far off. A common complaint during their tenure was that under Grantham and Mullen, we were recruiting a lot of tweeners and guys who were "versatile" and would be moved around versus guys who could just excel in a given position. Undersized DT's and a ton of rush ends. Undersized LBs but also too immobile for being an effective safety, etc.
I'm not a scout, but those were legit complaints I heard from others about the defensive guys we took. Basically, it's tweeners and guys not being put in the best position for them to succeed because they had to play out of position because of holes in the roster.

Although it's always more complicated, this does summarize the root of the problem.

Just major personnel issues plus years of bad coaching ingrained in them. Adding to the tweeners, we also have all-world looking athletes that don't play like it when under the lights. Everyone probably looked better in practice or showed promise, but in-game just revert to bad habits from lack of confidence, instincts or simple football IQ.

That, and replacing several guys at a time, including fr, makes staff try to run less complicated stuff, so some complain about lack of disguising coverage and blitzes, but would that cause more blown coverages or big scramble plays?

Same with the Offense, the QB/TEs/WRs can't execute the complete offense, and hard to change too much of the playbooks in-season.

Everything makes everything else worse and I don't see easy fixes now, but I really do see improvement and trying to find ways to simplify and do enough to try to win. It'll be a tough offseason with a lot to learn and many roster changes. Hope we have many early enrollees and transfers.

It certainly is, and always was. The hype after beating Utah tricked a lot of people. Billy knows what he is doing.

I was one of the people who didn’t really want to push Mullen out but now I see how many different ways Mullen was screwing us. Glad the bandaid was ripped off, and we landed somebody who I think knows how to build a program.
This off-season is gonna be huge.

Wingo, Borders, Black are some guys I thought would be making some noise by now. If they can’t see the field on this defense, it’s hard to believe they will play when we get more talent.

Except next year will be a tough transition for us unless there is a lot of development before then. Perhaps James and the guys you mention will make a jump but I'm guessing we'll be hitting the portal hard for a Miller replacement.

Borders is crazy to me. He’s a solid size, the other two have size issues.
If borders can’t see the field now…..sheesh
