1971 Roberto Clemente hits a fourth-inning homer off Baltimore's Mike Cuellar to put the Pirates ahead, 1-0, in Game 7 of the World Series. The right-fielder has hit safely in all seven games of the series, a feat he also accomplished in 1960 against the Yankees, to extend his consecutive Fall Classic hitting streak to 14 contests.

1971 At Memorial Stadium, behind Steve Blass's complete-game four-hitter, the Pirates beat Mike Cuellar and the heavily favored Orioles to capture their fourth world championship in franchise history. Immediately after the Game 7 victory, 21-year-old rookie Bruce Kison and his champagne-soaked best man Bob Moose are whisked away by helicopter to a waiting Lear Jet to attend his wedding in Pittsburgh, in which he arrives 33 minutes late.

1978 The Yankees capture their twenty-second and second consecutive World Championship, beating Los Angeles with a 7-2 victory at Dodger Stadium. Playoff hero Bucky Dent, who collects ten hits in the six-game series, is named the Fall Classic's Most Valuable Player.

1979 In Game 7, Willie Stargell goes 3-for 4, including his third home run in the Series, propelling the Pirates to a 4-1 victory over the Orioles. The Bucs overcame a three-games-to-one deficit to win their fifth World Championship in franchise history.

1979 "Next time, get your ass here before the seventh game,"- RICK DEMPSEY, Orioles' catcher chiding the president for skipping Opening Day ceremonies during his term in office. At Baltimore's Memorial Stadium, Jimmy Carter throws the ceremonial first pitch before the Pirates' 4-1 defeat of the Orioles in Game 7 of the Fall Classic. The toss marks the only time the Commander-in-Chief will perform the pregame ritual during his presidency.

 

1982 In Game 5, played at County Stadium, Robin Yount becomes the first player in World Series history to have two four-hit games. In addition to today's 4-for-4 performance, the Brewers' third baseman collected four hits in 6 at-bats in the Fall Classic opening contest, helping Milwaukee beat the Cardinals, 10-0.

1985 Billy Martin, who had become the team's skipper for the fourth time after the Yankees fired Yogi Berra in April, is replaced by Lou Piniella. "Billy, the Kid', piloted the 97-64 Bronx Bombers to a second-place finish, ending the season two games behind Toronto.

1987 In the first World Series game played indoors, the Twins club the Cardinals, winning Game 1 of the Fall Classic at the Metrodome, 10-1. The noise made by the boisterous hanky-waving sold-out Minnesota crowd at times exceeds 110 decibels, an audio level equivalent to a jet plane taking off at an airport.

1989 "Well, I don't know if we're on the air or not and I'm not sure I care at this particular moment but we are. Well folks, that's the greatest open in the history of television, bar none. We're still here. We are still as we can well on the air, and I guess you are hearing us, even though we have no picture and no return audio. And we will be back, we hope, from San Francisco in just a moment." - AL MICHAELS,ABC-TV play-by-play announcer reacting to the Bay Area earthquake. As the Giants and A's get ready to play Game 3 of the World Series, a massive 6.9-magnitude Loma Prieta earthquake hits the Bay Area, which will be responsible for 63 deaths. Commissioner Fay Vincent quickly postponed the Candlestick Park contest, wisely ordering the ballpark's evacuation.

1999 With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 15th frame, Robin Ventura hits a home run, which becomes known as "The Grand Slam Single," driving the Mets fans into a frenzied state as the team, who lost the first three games of the playoff series, extends the NLCS to a Game 6. Failing to touch all four bases when mobbed by his teammates on the base paths, the Shea Stadium hero only gets credit for a single with the umpires awarding New York a 4-3 victory, ruling Roger Cedeño crossed home plate before the on-field celebration began.

2000 David Justice's three-run homer propels the Yankees to their record 37th American League pennant in a come-from-behind victory over the Mariners, 9-7. The Bronx Bombers will face the Mets in the Fall Classic, setting up the first Subway Series in New York in 44 years when they faced the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1956.

2000 With an opposite-field single, Mariners catcher Dan Wilson snaps his 0-for-42 skid, the longest hitless streak in postseason history. Marv Owen had gone 0-for-31 in the 1934 and 1935 World Series playing for the Tigers.

2002 The legal suit against the fan who caught Barry Bonds' record-breaking 73rd home run, brought by three friends claiming a promise they made to split the ball's value, in exchange for a ticket to the game, is settled when Jay Arsenault agrees to sell the ball and divide the money. Arsenault's lawyer said his client initially eluded the friends because of being overwhelmed by the situation.

2003 Early editions of the New York Post include an editorial claiming the Yankees couldn't get the job done against the Red Sox in Game 7 of the ALCS. However, the Bronx Bombers rally to beat their arch-rival in 11 innings, 6-5.

2004 Carlos Beltran, in Game 4 of the NLCS at Minute Maid Park, goes deep in the seventh inning, giving the Astros an eventual 6-5 victory over the Cardinals. With the round-trippers, the Houston center fielder sets a new postseason record, hitting a homer in five consecutive playoff games, and ties Barry Bonds' 2002 mark with a total of eight postseason round-trippers.

2005 The juiced Minute Maid Park crowd, anticipating the Astros' first National League crown, after the first two batters are quickly retired, is 'pulverized' when Albert Pujols hits a two-out three-run ninth-inning homer. A two-strike single stroked by David Eckstein and a walk worked out by Jim Edmonds set the stage for the Cardinals' dramatic 5-4 comeback.

2018 In Game 4 of the ALCS, crew chief Joe West rules fan interference, turning Jose Altuve's potential two-run homer into the second out of the inning. Red Sox right fielder Mookie Betts appeared ready to make a catch over the top of the wall before a fan inadvertently bumped into his open glove, closing it the instant before he could make the play.

• • 1911 - The Philadelphia Athletics scored twice in the 11th inning to beat the New York Giants, 3-2, in Game 3 of the World Series. Frank Baker hit a home run in the ninth inning off Christy Mathewson to tie the score, 1-1. Baker was tagged with the nickname "Home Run" for his exploits.
    
  • 1960 - The National League formally awarded franchises to the New York Metropolitan Baseball Club, Inc., headed by Joan Payson, and a Houston group headed by Judge Roy Hofheinz, Craig Cullinan, and R.E. Smith.
    
  • 1976 - On a cold Sunday night, the Reds gang up on Catfish Hunter for three runs, but the Yankees battle back to tie it up. With two outs in the ninth inning, Yanks shortstop Fred Stanley throws Griffey's easy grounder into the dugout. A walk and a Tony Perez single follow and the Yanks lose the second World Series game 4-3.
    
  • 1978 - The Yanks win their fourth straight game, 7-2, to clinch their second consecutive World Championship over the Dodgers. Brian Doyle and Series MVP Bucky Dent have three hits apiece.
    
  • 1979 - Willie Stargell's two-run homer gave the Pirates a 4-1 triumph over the Baltimore Orioles and the World Series in seven games.
    
  • 1982 - Robin Yount records his second four-hit game of the World Series to lead the Brewers to a 6-4 win in Game Five and give Milwaukee a 3-2 lead overall. Yount is the first player ever to have multiple four-hit games in one World Series.
    
  • 1987 - The Minnesota Twins overpowered St. Louis, 10-1, in the opening game of the first indoor World Series. Dan Gladden's grand slam capped a seven-run fourth inning.
    
  • 1989 - Minutes before Game 3 of the World Series between Oakland and San Francisco, an earthquake hit the Bay area. The game was postponed and the Series resumed 11 days later.
    
  • 1990 - In the first extra-inning World Series game since 1986, the underdog Reds beat the A's 5-4 in ten innings to take a surprising 2-0 lead in the Series. Reds outfielder Billy Hatcher goes 4-for-4 to run his consecutive hit streak to seven, tying Thurman Munson's World Series record.
    
  • 1991 - Brian Hunter's two-run home run in the first inning of Game Seven is all John Smoltz needs as he tosses a 4-0 shutout over Pittsburgh.
    
  • 1992 - Tom Glavine goes the distance to give the Braves a 3-1 win over the Blue Jays in Game One of the World Series.
    
  • 1993 - A five-run uprising in the third pushes the Phillies to a 6-4 win over Toronto in Game Two. Mitch Williams earns his only save of the Series.
    
  • 1995 - The Cleveland Indians beat the Seattle Mariners, 4-0, in Game 6 of the American League championship series, winning their first pennant since 1954.
    
  • 1996 - The Atlanta Braves had the biggest blowout in postseason history, beating St. Louis, 15-0, in Game 7 of the NL championship series to complete a comeback from a 3-1 deficit. The Cardinals became the only club to blow a 3-1 edge three times in the postseason.

1913 In Cincinnati, the Giants rout the White Sox, 11-2, beginning a five-month worldwide barnstorming trip that will include stops in Australia, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. The teams recruit top players from both leagues, including Tris Speaker, Buck Weaver, Christy Mathewson, and Sam Crawford, with former Olympian Jim Thorpe being the main attraction during the global tour.

1925 Two weeks after pitching his final game for the Reds, 34-year-old Army Reserve First Lieutenant pilot Marvin Goodwin's plane goes into a tailspin and crashes near Houston's Ellington Field. The right-hander, appearing in four games for Cincinnati, three as a starter, posted an 0-2 record, which included two complete games, will die in three days due to being severely injured, with two broken legs, a fractured skull, along with critical internal injuries.

1950 After spending half a century managing in the major leagues, Connie Mack retires as skipper of the A's. The 87-year-old manager, who has the most wins and losses in the game's history, will be replaced by Jimmy Dykes, after compiling a 3731-3948 (.486) record during his 50 years in the dugout.

1960 "Resigned, fired, quit, discharged, use whatever you damn please. I'll never make the mistake of being seventy again" - CASEY STENGEL, announcing his dismissal from the Yankees for being too old to manage. Five days after losing to the Pirates in Game 7 of the World Series, the Yankees fire Casey Stengel, believing he's too old to manage. During his twelve-year tenure with the Bronx Bombers, the 'Old Perfesser' compiled an 1149-696 (.623) record while capturing ten AL pennants and seven World Championships.

​

1967 Avoiding a protracted legal battle, the American League awards a new franchise to Kansas City, replacing the team the city lost when the owners permitted Charlie Finley to move the A's to Oakland. Also, the AL announces a new team, soon known as the Pilots, will play in Seattle, an ill-advised decision given that new owners will prove to be under-financed.

 

1971 Dick Williams is named the Associated Press American League Manager of the Year after guiding the A's to their first playoff appearance since the franchise faced St. Louis in the 1931 Fall Classic. The 42-year-old skipper also copped the honor for piloting the Red Sox during the team's Impossible Dream season in 1967.

1972 With runners on second and third base in Game 3 of the World Series, Johnny Bench strikes out looking with a full count when a trick play dupes him. After the A's manager visits the mound and catcher Gene Tenace returns to his position, the Reds' slugger, believing he is getting an intentional walk, is fooled when the A's backstop quickly crouches behind home to catch a called strike three from Rollie Fingers.

1977 After homering in his last at-bat yesterday and drawing a walk in his first at-bat, Reggie Jackson hits three more on each first pitch he sees in the Yankees' 8-4 victory over the Dodgers in the Bronx, giving him three homers on three consecutive pitches. Mr. October's heroics in Game 6 of the Fall Classic assure the team of their twenty-first World Championship and first since 1962.

1988 At Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, Mark McGwire goes deep off LA's Jay Howell with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the A's a 2-1 victory for its only win in the Series. Along with Kirk Gibson's heroics in Game 1, Big Mac's walk-off home run marks the first time two game-winning round-trippers occur in the same Fall Classic.

1992 In the top of the ninth inning, Ed Sprague, pinch-hitting for the first time this season, takes Braves' closer Jeff Reardon deep for a two-run homer, giving the Blue Jays an eventual 5-4 comeback victory in Game 2 of the World Series. The corner infield er's second round-tripper of the year knots the Fall Classic at one game apiece, with the series shifting to Toronto.

1992 The Canadian flag is inadvertently flown upside-down by a United States Marine Corps color guard at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium during the pregame ceremonies before Game 2 of the World Series between the Blue Jays and Braves. Although the international incident annoys the U.S.'s northern neighbors, most Toronto fans resist the call to fly the American Stars and Stripes similarly during Game 3 at the SkyDome but opt instead to wave Canada's L'Unifoli with the message "This end up" affixed to the top.

1999 The Yankees win their record 36th pennant when the team beats the Red Sox, 6-1, in Game 5 of the ALCS. Orlando Hernandez blanks Boston into the eighth inning with Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada providing the offense punch with two-run round-trippers, respectively, in the first and ninth frames of the Fenway Park contest.

2004 After 5 hours, 49 minutes, and 471 pitches, the Red Sox outlast the Yankees, 5-4, in Game 5 of the league championship. Boston's DH David Ortiz, who is the first player in baseball history to hit two walk-off home runs during the postseason, ends the longest game in ALCS history at 1:22 a.m. with a two-out single into center scoring Johnny Damon from second in the 14th inning at Fenway Park.

2005 The Montreal Canadiens pay tribute to the departed Expos team by raising a commemorative banner to the rafters of Montreal's Bell Centre. Working in his first game for the NHL team, displaced mascot Youppi, and former players Gary Carter and Andre Dawson assist in the hoisting of the blue and orange banner that features their retired numbers, 8 and 10, respectively, as well as the numbers for Tim Raines (30) and Rusty Staub (10).

2008 The Red Sox, scoring in each of the last three innings, erase a seven-run deficit in the seventh to beat the Rays, 8-7, in Game 5 of the ALCS. The Philadelphia A's, who rallied after trailing 8-0 to beat the Cubs, 10-8, in Game 4 of the 1929 World Series, are the only team to have made a bigger comeback in the postseason.

2010 The Mariners hire Eric Wedge to be the team's new manager, Seattle's seventh skipper since 2003. The former Cleveland field boss, out of baseball last season after spending seven seasons in the Tribe's dugout, replaces Daren Brown, filling in on an interim basis for Don Wakamatsu, dismissed in August.

2010 The Cardinals announce the signing of its long-time manager, keeping Tony La Russa in the Redbirds' dugout for at least one more season, the skipper's sixteenth with the club. The franchise has won eight division titles, two National League pennants, and a World Championship under their 66-year-old pilot; however, his heavily favored team collapses during the season's final two months, finishing five games behind Cincinnati.

2012 At Comerica Park, the Tigers win their second American League pennant in seven years when they beat the punchless Yankees, 8-1, to complete a four-game sweep. The contest marks the first time the Bronx Bombers have failed to win a game in a best-of-seven series since they dropped four straight to the Reds in the 1976 Fall Classic.

2013 The Cardinals advance to their second World Series in three seasons, routing the Dodgers, 9-0, in Game 6 of the NLCS. Behind the timely hitting of Carlos Beltran and the strong pitching performance of rookie right-hander Michael Wacha, St. Louis beats Clayton Kershaw (16-9, 1.83) for the fourth time this season, including a pair of victories in this round of the postseason.

• • 1910 - The Philadelphia Athletics pounded the Chicago Cubs 9-3 for a 2-0 lead in the World Series. Eddie Collins had three hits, including two doubles, and two stolen bases.
    
  • 1950 - Connie Mack, at age 87, retired as manager of the Philadelphia Athletics after 50 years, and Jimmy Dykes was named to replace him. Mack, together with Ben Shibe, founded the Athletics in 1901.
    
  • 1960 - Instituting a mandatory retirement age of 65, New York Yankee co-owners Dan Topping and Del Webb relieve Casey Stengel (1,149-696) as manager.
  • 1967 - The AL approves the Athletics' shift to Oakland. Kansas City is promised a new team by 1971. When Senator Stuart Symington and Kansas City Mayor Ilus Davis threaten action against the move, AL President Joe Cronin reopens talks, and the expansion deadline is moved forward to 1969.
  • 1972 - With runners at second and third and a 3-2 count, the A's fake an intentional walk and strike out Johnny Bench looking in Game Three. Blue Moon Odom fans 11, but Cincinnati's Jack Billingham is the 1-0 winner as the Reds win their first game of the World Series.
    
  • 1973 - The Mets' Jerry Koosman and Tug McGraw combined to three-hit the Oakland A's and take 3-2 lead in the World Series.
    
  • 1977 - Reggie Jackson hit three consecutive home runs to lead New York to an 8-4 victory over the Los Angles Dodgers and give the Yankees the World Series title in six games. Jackson drove in five runs, and all three shots came on the first pitch.
    
  • 1988 - Mark McGwire's home run off Jay Howell in the bottom of the ninth gives Oakland a 2-1 win in Game Three of the World Series.
