And before the head coaching positions with the Bandits and Duke, SOS had five years as an assistant with the Gators, Georgia Tech and Duke. Jim Harbaugh had a similar resume before he came home to Michigan (positions as an assistant with Western Kentucky and the Raiders and head coaching positions at the University of San Diego, Stanford and the 49ers).

 

I could see Tebow maybe being a running back coach and recruiting coordinator some day, if he ever wanted to return to football in a coaching capacity. As a former running QB, he has some qualifications to coach RB's. And coaching RB's is generally not as difficult as most of the other positions. He would be an amazing recruiter, no doubt, and good mentor to players. I don't see him likely to ever become a head coach or even an offensive coordinator.

 

Is that ambassador? HBC emeritus?

Kerwin at least made a little sense. He at least was into college coaching. If he had chosen a different path I think he could have made a hell of a head coach but he seemed to think being the head coach at small schools was more important than working his way up in major colleges.

I think he could be a great coach but he'd have to want to do it, who knows if he's even interested.

I believe he called his own plays as the QB for the Toronto Argonauts in addition to coaching at the High School and College level where he was very successful until the gig at USF.

 

I don't understand your, "he did none of it" comment. He built a program to a state championship at Trinity Catholic in Ocala, he coached Jacksonville to an average of around 9 wins a season, and won a national championship at Valdosta State. There are coaches that have done far less than he has.

 

If you want to believe those accomplishments are a resume builder for a job such as UF, well then we just beg to differ. I won a couple of golf league titles in my youth. That does not make me a golf pro.

As of this time, his resume for HBC is real thin. Yes, he did pay the game and he did it very well in collage. Other than that I do not see any job history in the field of coaching. A good start would be an assistant coach at a high school or a small college.it will take about ten or more years before he could get HBC job.

Never said they were a resume' builder for UF. I merely stated that he had led teams to championships. However, what were Muschamp's great accomplishments before getting the HC job at UF, other than being a good DC and being the coach in waiting at Texas? Kerwin has at least run programs, not at the level of UF, but he has run them, and he was offensive coordinator in the CFL. That's at least as qualified as Muschamp was. Also, I don't remember him ever acting like he should've been hired at UF.

 

What slowed and hindered Kerwin's ascent in the college coaching ranks was that he played professionally for over ten years and those were ten years lost in coaching experience.

 

I think your original point was that he did indeed do things that made him a candidate for the job. As I snarkily replied, my skills in my youth did not get me over the line in golf. Same as Kerwin. We can like him as a fine example of a distinguished alum, but he just did not do anything to give him a chance at the UF job.

Mus-take, as bad as he turned out, is just like plenty of other coaches (especially in the NFL). They are assistant coaches until they aren't and plenty of them get smacked by The Peter Principle. He is a prime example of it. He was thought highly while he was at Texas. He EARNED that distinction.

 

Nope, you read into my post what you wanted. I never said, nor do I think he was ready to be the guy at UF. Coaching a high school team, a non scholarship college team, and another DII team didn't make him a candidate at UF or anywhere else higher than some schools like Ga. State or UAB, as you said, and I agree with that point. I would've liked for him to have had the opportunity, but he's never put himself in a position to be a viable candidate for the job.

 

I hear you. Its interesting to see if it happens at any level.

Would his message resonate? Where would he begin..HS? College? Its easily 5-10 years

 

How long did Spurrier play in the pros? Didn't seem to slow him down.
