I was at the 1997 UF vs FSU game, but the broadcast version where Shaun McDonough yells "Green is behind the defense" has always been one of my favorite Gator moments. Every time I replay it, I yell and give a few "take that" fist pumps as I know a Gator victory is near. Sadly, I am no longer able to enjoy this Gator moment as "defense" has been completely eradicated from the Gator vocabulary and all I am left with is Green's behind.
Hey, Green is still behind the defense, it is just that Green plays for the opposing team. You know, when all things are burning down (in our own minds) we still have gallows humor. Try it sometime.
I will never, ever forget that Game! Never! And I always call it, “The Loudest Game Ever in The Swamp!” It sure was! That was a fantastic game with brilliant coaching and game play by Coach Spurrier! Starting QB SO Doug Johnson and QB Noah Brindise rotating every play of the game! When it looked maybe we wouldn’t get the Win, Gator QB Doug Johnson, with about 2 minutes left in the game, made eye contact with a WR (forget his name right now)from the Gator 20, and got deep into Semi territory! Next play a Gator RB got a TD! Then KO to the Semis. And Gators got an Int.! Gators Win! Gators Win! Gators Win! FINAL. FSU 29. UF 32. November 22, 1997.
