While beyond stupid, and hopefully results in a lengthy incarceration, most of those paintings have glass coatings over them. One to protect them from stupid things like this, but to also absorb without passing (like car windows) the harmful portions of the UV spectrum often produced by the lighting. The painting was undamaged by this act of stupidity.
That's probably true, they need to hit oil companies where they hurt and start blowing up pipelines or gas stations, stuff that actually inconveniences people and impacts bottom lines. (But thats big boy stuff like the Nordstream thing) So I can see why they might not choose that option and go with vandalism and pitch invasions at soccer games.
They did not follow classic 'Monkey Wrench Gang' guidelines. The oil companies are providing a fuel 'in demand' around the world. The key to decarbonizing the world, ( never completely), is to significantly reduce DEMAND. As long as a resource or product is in demand there will be suppliers, simple.
Better they hack electronic pipeline valves and connections. Russia is currently reducing supply to hurt the EU. This is forcing EU nations to rush through new renewable energy projects to reduce the impact of current and future supply chain issues. EV sales are increasing around the world. Massive global energy conservation efforts could have a measurable impact on the price of oil and help reduce the rate of global warming. Fusion reactors are 20-30 years out.
Shoulda left them glued while a custodian whistled in with a bottle of windex and cleaned it up in 2 minutes.
It would be interesting to leave them glued to it over night and under watch. They could be freed upon a recorded apology with acknowledgement that their actions were unacceptable. Go GATORS! ,WESGATORS
Unless things have changed, the only ones I recall being protected in French museums where the Mona Lisa and the chalk paintings of ballerinas (Degas?) due to how sensitive they are to light... The rest we like shown here, maybe a velvet rope .. could have easily touched them all... Edit... It does appear they have put a lot of paintings, including this one, behind glass since I was there. Glad it was protected, but it was pretty incredible to see a van Gogh in "3d", you could.stand to the side and look at it an angle and see globs of paint piled up on the canvis... These idiots ruin a good experience....
Let the punishment fit the crime...A good idea in this situation for sure. If they are thirsty and ask for water - give it to them. Let it be miserably uncomfortable for a few hours. Oil paint is generally made with linseed oil. Safflower oil and oils made from nuts like walnut are also used in artist's paint.
From my understanding of history, this is the “real reason” he cut off his ear. So he wouldn’t have to listen to them nagging him anymore...
it is reported, the Pureed Tomato sauce caused 'no harm' to the painting with very minor damage to the frame. I have always wondered how many 'priceless' works of art are copied for public display...
Great idea, or just start shooting these mentally ill people from the get go and they will stop this chit. It only takes one time.
