It takes decades to execute someone, I'm not sure there is much of a difference because the murderer is living out their life for decades after the crime on death row too. A life sentence means its over and everyone can move on. With the death penalty, and the endless appeals, and the execution, that's often more opportunity for the victims to relive the crime and be retraumatized as that person gets in the news, etc. The idea that capital punishment serves as some kind of closure is pretty dubious.

In the case of violent crime, I understand the appeal of beatings all the way to executions in cases where it's clear cut because we have video evidence of the crime, for example - though I wonder how many cases that would involve. Even with many confessions we later find out the person was coerced or mentally ill. As horrible as rape is, that would be a particularly tough one - are we going to rape people found guilty when they asserted the defense of consent? Ultimately, I think the risk of torturing or killing innocent and mentally ill people outweighs any upside in terms of a deterrent effect. And I think accepting that calculus would require me to put more faith in our criminal justice system than I have.

Here's the thing. You cant really do an eye for an eye for a murderer unless you kill his loved ones and make him feal the pain he placed on others. Now you are killing innocents and the cycle starts again with you.

    It's a no for me.

I am however 100% ok with leaving a rope in every solitary cell for the worst of the worst who want to do us all a favor.

Sorta like Barbosa kept leaving Jack Sparrow with one bullet in his pistol when he dropped him on that Island

Yep I'm soulless. Let's be honest, if you're ever in the situation where you were sentenced to death. You were not a good person in the first place. Things you have done lead you to being in that position.

I don't think I have ever heard of a squeaky clean good citizen given the death penalty.

Remove their glued hands with a machete. That will stop these idiots from doing these stunts. It will only take a few missing limbs for them to get the hint.

How many criminals have been executed and later found out not guilty?
I know there has been some on death row but has anyone actually been executed and then exonerated.

I understand the sentiment, and I’m not against the death penalty, but you cast too wide a net IMHO.

I think most convicted rapists get their just desserts anyway with no need for eye for an eye legislation.

Just always room them with the biggest guy with the longest loneliest sentence on the cell block.

Are you sure? Perhaps you aren’t considering the sheer number of YouTube videos mocking conservatives that you’d be forced to watch in such a society.

Murderers arent thought of in the same negative light as rapists in prison.

I get the sentiment. I really do. But casual talk about prison rape has always troubled me.

Even with the most heinous criminals, this just sounds to me like government sub-contracting out rape, which I consider a form of torture, without having to own it. If we think rape and torture are valid ways to deter or punish crime, then I think the government should transparently do those things itself as it does with executions. That might make it less accepted by society, though I'm not sure about that; there are clearly lots of people who think the prospect of a criminal getting raped in prison is useful, acceptable, or even funny. Yeah, practically, it's hard to lose sleep over that happening to someone like Dahmer, but it doesn't seem to stop there either. Prison rape jokes are ubiquitous for criminals who are not in the Dahmer category.

You have mentioned that Jesus would discourage a woman from killing her baby but if she did kill her baby, he would love her and embrace her with open arms afterwards. Does that apply to rapists and or are they un-redeemable to the point that Jesus wants them to be raped or tortured? I'm not Christian, and I know Christianity doesn't preclude just punishment - maybe even capital punishment. But is rape as a punishment something you think Jesus would support?

Prison rape is usually the strongest preying on the weakest, so I'm not sure the "badest" dudes are the ones being "punished" in this way.

    Interesting questions.
Eye for an eye was and OT teaching. Jesus refuted it.

I am reminded of Spurrier's comment on Wuerffel:

“Danny, during the course of a game, he doesn’t have a nasty temper at all,” Spurrier said. “I think he’s sort of like a New Testament person. He gets slapped upside the face, he turns the other cheek. He says ‘Lord forgiveth, they know not what they doeth.’ I’m probably more of an Old Testament person; you spear our guy in the ear hole, I think you’re supposed to spear the other guy in the ear hole.”

In seriousness, I wasnt condoning it. Just giving an example of what could be done without engaging in the legal concept of eye for eye if a society wanted to.

My being against capital punishment comes from Jesus' position.

I believe all are redeemable. My human emotional side can certainly take over for the most heinous of crimes though.

I am sadly far, far, farrrrrr short of Jesus standard in a plethora of ways.

There is a system of "justice" in which the concept of "an eye for an eye" is one of its core principles. It's called Sharia Law.

How do you handle the concepts of mens rea/criminal intent in the eye for eye scenario?
