As the sentence for the Parkland shooter is announced… and Governor Desantis makes his statement that he thinks it should have been the death penalty… it got me wondering. How would each of you feel if the US went to a punishment system along the lines of an eye for an eye. Now I know immediately two things are happening. 1.The religious origins of this idea have offended/ turned off some of you. Don’t let it. I do not want to look at it from a religious point of view but a pragmatic one. 2. Some will immediately be turned off by the brutality of what I am suggesting. That is understandable… but let me explain my thought process. Freesom. You have the freedom to do what you want. Want to driveat 180 miles an hr on 1-4… want to do any drug you can imagine? Want to drink Tennessee whisky before the big game? Ok. But any damage you do, any life you take, any harm you render - you are charged to the same. Kill someone out your drunken or drug induced stupor - get the death penalty. Walk into a school and murder kids. Death penalty. Not everything would apply, but I’d rather see known, no questions asked murders get an immediate death penalty than life in prison. I’m fine with drunk drivers who kill some one getting the death penalty. Wife beaters get beaten, child abusers get abused. Brutal? Yes. But I grow weary of the dregs of our society causing harm, pain and dealing in death then living off the govt dime for years as the courts drag on and on and on. Kill them. They do it deserve to live and get on with it.
Question: who do we kill if we convict an innocent person and that person is put to death before it is discovered that they are innocent?

I’m not sure I presented any scenarios that wouldn’t be open and shut cases. I also do not think said that our judicial( trial/jury) system needs to change. Parkland shooter.. you think there is any wiggle room there? Uvalde shooter? The two morons shooting at each other on the interstate and hitting the kids.. if those kids die you think there was any questions of who done it? Open and shut cases .No questions. Guy is a murder. Kill him.
So who gets to decide if something is an "open and shut case" that permits the death penalty? Also, let's say that this person puts a case in that category that turns out to be less open-and-shut than they claimed. Do we kill them?
Well, given that our justice system is not designed to prove guilt, it seems a really bad idea to do something irreversible.
An “eye for an eye” is a reference in the Torah law of damages. It does not have the meaning implied on your post.
Interesting timing opening this thread. Chris Cuomo is now on Newsnation. I'm watching his show and a woman called in who used to work as a corrections officer at a prison, and she used to have to witness executions. She made a statement that the people who have to carry out the execution experience life changing effects from doing it. I don't like capital punishment for two reasons. One, it costs us more as taxpayers than keeping them alive and jailed. Two, it simply doesn't stop people from murdering.
I had to think about this but I disagree. This is assuming my days weren't overwhelmed with a guilty conscience of some heinous crime I committed.
No kidding… which is why one the very first things. Said is that I did not NOT want to look at it from a religious standpoint.
I had a few friends who had witness the execution. It is terrible I agree. However, for people like the parkland shooter, the Uvalde murderer, other individuals who deal death and mayhem to innocents everywhere… it’s not about stopping crime. It’s about removing someone who has no moral compass and does not value others life.
You brought up this ridiculous hypothetical, so you tell me how this would play out in the states where the police routinely violate the rights of minorities? Please, share with us what percentage of those put to death do you believe would be guilty of any crime?
About how it does now. I didn’t bring up changing our justice system. Just the punishment. Do you think the parkland shooter deserves to live? The Uvalde shooter? Do you believe that it’s ok for drunk drives to kill 10 of thousands each year and walk away to live their lives? Yes it is a hypothetical.. and I agree a ridiculous one. But at what point do we say these people do not need to be among us. Is life in prison really the answer? I don’t believe it is.
