I guess with you it either has to be 100% effective or zero percent. There is no in between. Even now the vaccine provides some level of infection protection for some number of months. It’s no longer anywhere near 100% but it’s a lot higher than zero.

    From a friend ...

“They wanted friends and neighbors to turn me in and my family to hate me and reject my visits. They wanted my employer to fire me and they did every thing possible to keep me from traveling. If I happened to get sick, they wanted me forbidden to get medical treatment and hoped that I died.
I know who they are and I will never forget....Never.”

For anyone interested in actual science, as opposed to the Idiot Report released by the State of Embarrassment (uh, Florida)....please read the entire Twitter thread. Well worth it.

This thread has largely been taken over by the science denying free riders. That they even refer to Lapido’s announcement or that Florida policy Is made based on that kind of “so called” report just shows how truly stupid people are. At this point, I don’t even read most of the posts on this thread anymore.

The marked contrast in pandemic outcomes between Japan and the United States

A piece in The Economist this week about masks, and how at least half of the people in Japan are planning to continue to use masks indefinitely (where there was never a mandate), prompts a deeper look into what has been the secret of Japan’s extraordinary success in the pandemic. Over time it has the least cumulative deaths per capita of any major country in the world. That’s without a Zero-Covid policy or any national lockdowns, which is why I have not included China as a comparator.

Before we get into that data, let’s take a look at the age pyramids for Japan and the United States. The #1 risk factor for death from Covid is advanced age, and you can see that in Japan that ~25% of the population is age 65 and older, whereas in the United States that proportion is substantially reduced at 15%. Sure there are differences in co-morbidities like obesity and diabetes, but there is also the tradeoff of a much higher population density in Japan.

Yeah, I mean I wish it was just the people who wanted Lockdowns, school closures, masks, vaxxing kids and vax mandates to stop "spread" who get to talk on this thread LOL. You guys should be the ones "deciding" the science...

FYI most people just laugh at posters like you who were literally were wrong on just about every covid measure taken over the last 2+ years.

Overlooking the health of the their elderly is the issue. Pretty sure you know that but I guess you are still clinging to the belief that masks work. Pretty funny considering all the data staring you in the face.

Japan data from Demographics of COVID-19 Deaths - Japan
USA data from Demographics of COVID-19 Deaths - United States of America

Japan had about 600 deaths per million in their 60+ age group.
We grouped on the 5s rather than the 10s, But whether we look at 55+ or 65+, the story is the same, Japan did way better than us. For 55+ our death rate was over 9000 per million. For 65+ that goes up to 13.5k per million.

I'm not sure how anyone looking at the data could come away with the conclusion that Japan's headline numbers only look good because they overlooked the health of their elderly.

Going through all the age groups, there is no age group where we are within a factor of ten of Japan. For anyone looking for a gold standard, here it is.

Sure, let's look at their health compared to ours. Japan is 2nd in the world in life expectancy and we are around 46. Big difference. That is the reason. The Japanese as a whole are much healthier than us. Not even close.

I was curious if the relationship held with excess deaths and it does.

Why is there a huge mortality gap between Japan and US?

There are a host of potential reasons

    - significantly higher vaccine uptake
    - masking
    - much better overall health
    - Being an island nation and much stricter border inflow standards

Me neither, and worse, everytime I read something truly ignorant, I get my blood pressure up. However, for the handful of people still interested, when I find information like this I try to share it. I am not changing anyone's mind, I hoping to share it with the handful of reasonable people left in this thread.
