I see this same post anytime anyone questions the coaching. There are some issues with this team that are related to the schemes being called by the coaches. And fans are right to point that out and complain about those issues, because other teams sure as hell will have seen them on tape and try exploit them. Running routes where one receiver is ending his route within 5-10 yards of a second receiver should never happen at this level. That happened to us in the 2020 UGA game and resulted in a pick 6. You are dragging an additional defender into the throw window for either route, which is more likely to lead to a pick. We have had issues with the same formation on defense the past 3-4 games. The offense splits out two WR, and we match with a corner and a safety/nickel, so far, so good. Then they bring motion (usually the RB) to the two WR side and we do nothing to match. So immediately there is a 3 on 2 on that side of the field for the offense. The offense makes their blocks and it is an uncontested 5 yard gain. Make the safety miss and it is a 10+ yard gain. The way our secondary almost always bails at the snap makes plays like these much harder to stop. Other teams attack the LOS, which makes these plays harder to run because that 5-10 yard cushion at the LOS doesn’t exist. We play way too soft on defense, which is directly attributable to coaching and scheme.

The broncos on Thursday night had two receivers not only in the same area, but fighting over the ball. It unfortunately happens. As for the 3 on 2 with the rb motion, what should be happening and why is it not? The bails at the snap are interesting. Kimber had a pick where he didn’t bail earlier in the year. Hill didn’t bail on his 2 picks I don’t believe. Is it a scheme issue or an execution issue?

If coaches are all knowing, why are some fired mid-season? It is obvious we are getting outcoached and outschemed in certain situations. Fair argument that installs and knowledge greater in year 2 of a program. However, fans can correctly point out if two or three players are running defenders into the same area or routes are not open. Again, argue that WR did not sit in open spot in zone or ran the wrong route. Don’t simply state coaches know more than fans. Some fans played, coached or watched football for 40 years. Likely know more than a coach with a year or two of college coaching experience. Can I not state concern with our 5’9 glass wearing TE coach that never played the position, never coached TEs in a P5 program, who missed on all TE recruits in 23 and does not have any of the top 10 ranked TEs interested in 24? Or does your don’t question the coaches that know more than you apply in this situation as well?

Deflating, and gave them good field position. It is interesting how a couple of FGs(3pts each) can change the course of a game, made or missed. I predict bama wins because bama is greater than tenn. However, I recall how strong our run game was until we played Tenn and they stuffed us for the most part- at least more so than any other team had to that point. Maybe Tenn can keep it close and surprise bama. Going to be a good game. A bit like if on a dating site and chastised for messaging the ladies.
And who's fault is that? If the defense would stop letting teams convert 80% of third downs (feels like it anyway) we would get more possessions. I hate that our DB's are always 10 yards off the receiver and then we also don't bring a blitzer. Man defense and create pressure. That should get more stops without the other team just sitting back and doing what they want.
66 yards passing in a game, one thing to be playing in a driving rainstorm, but on a nice weather day, something is wrong. it is alright to voice opinions to help. The three long first down conversions by Mizzou shows we are struggling with getting teams offenses off the field, changes need to be made. To see this continue, the comments are going to be stronger the longer we continue not to make changes in these areas!
1000% with every possession being important. The way CBN likes to control the game offensively there is not a lot of room for error because you will be limited to the number of possessions you have. Definitely take some getting used to.
It was the 3rd down play call that was maddening. Was thinking they could have come up with something better than what was run?
I am not sure what should be happening. Do they expect the LB to first play the run and then get out to cover the flat? Not likely to happen unless your LB is a monster stud. Do they expect the CB to cover the flat and the deep safety to that side take the outside receiver? Unless your CB plays hero ball and completely whips his blocker, there isn’t enough time for the LB to get there even if the LB completely abandons run responsibility. That leaves the slot defender/deep safety making a beeline for the LOS as soon as the pass is made and we don’t seem to do that well. A better response would be to walk up one of the safeties in response to the motion, but that would leave the backend of the defense more vulnerable, and we don’t seem to like doing that.
He is a sophomore, with 5 or six starts. We are very young, top to bottom. He is our best chance at success today and going forward. If Arch flips AR may get beat out. Otherwise he’ll improve with time behind center and win some big games. Find someone better and/or bring in a better supporting cast to make his job easier. Make some stops on defense and we are 6-0. We’re gonna have to live with the coaching.
did you see the end of the bama tam game? The Bama safety played the exact technique perfectly and made the stop for a 2-3 yd gain. Are we are talking about 3rd down situations exclusively? Our trouble isn’t exclusively our base defense it’s situational defense particularly 3rd and long. Any casual fan with decades of watching who has recently attended a coaching clinic would know a hot topic was 3rd down defense. Specifically changing your tendencies, I know crazy talk. Why change what is working. unfortunately there is a lot of group think in sports coaching (everybody is doing it, safety in numbers, etc.) coaches sometimes overthink and forget simpler is better. 3rd and long should be an aggressive defensive down (think reward for fortunate outcomes on 1-2 downs) bring pressure and play aggressive on the edges and in coverage make the offense execute in a stressful environment yet, the brotherhood is seeing a matriculation of passive let the offense make a mistake mentality take root. This mystifies me, a sure tackling defense with the knowledge that they have a significant cushion of 8-15 yds should win 70% plus of the downs yet that isn’t the case Wrt to motion every defense accounts for numbers and has automatic adjustments built into alignment rules it would be maddening if players constantly bust on alignment/assignment it does happen though usually related to experience and youth
Our secondary does not play zone very well. It hasn’t for the past 3 plus years. So to ask them to sit back in zone while rushing 3 is a recipe for disaster. Will that change next year? I don’t think a bend but don’t break defense will work very well absent superior talent. Alabama has that talent, but we don’t. Someone posted a play from the UT game basically blaming the LB for leaving the CB on an island against that 2-wide formation when the RB motioned out. When the RB motioned out, we did not adjust at all, and they threw a WR screen to the RB for 10 plus yards where the outside WR blocked the CB and the inside receiver ran off the slot defender. The LB was caught looking into the backfield, but it would have been a hard play even if he had immediately sprinted to the RB. If the LB had followed the RB in motion, they are now 6 on 4 in the box with Hooker as a running QB. Like you said, I think most posters have an issue with the lack of aggression on defense, especially when in coverage. With the above formation, if you have the safety creep up/rotate down and shift to a single high safety, at least the offense is having to react. Instead, we have a 2 on 1 for the offense because we play it so safe with our safeties and most of our secondary bails immediately at the snap. This passive play by our secondary makes it easier for opposing QBs to have great passing days.
To clarify I’m not advocating or defending a particular defensive scheme. I was just pointing out the coverage is sound when players are properly coached in responsibility and play recognition. Covering the back out is basic when there are 2 ILBs, in a nickel/dime situation this isn’t necessary adjust out of the secondary. That’s why you are in a secondary heavy formation. Remember every formation has a base defensive alignment. It doesn’t change with motion the adjustment happens automatically “on the fly” this must be built into the defense just as every defensive alignment must start with ability fo defend the option. Teaching must be awful because zone is a misnomer. Nobody covers grass, zone evolves into man coverage while you have a body in your zone. This is basic and easily taught. One would think our coaches would also “teach” the weakness of each defense vs offensive alignment by position to help our players realize the expected counter move in addition to favorite plays to aid in okay recognition. This is a must given defense starts at a disadvantage wrt to snap count and play/play direction. Play recognition is the only tool to gain equal footing quickly during the play. The bigger issue is giving away fortuitous down and distance situations on 3rd down we aren’t the only team to do this but we have perfected it into an art form. This is a trend among coaches. I reference the mentality of afraid to fail vs day date favors the aggressor
I just finished watching the GNFP defensive film review. On a few of those long pass conversions, we were supposedly in a zone where the S(Dean) would stand in the same position he started the play in, usually somewhere around the hash marks/numbers, and just stand there and stare at the QB until the pass was thrown. The CB(Marshall) on his side of the field was consistently giving up a 10 yard cushion to any route to his side of the field while in zone. The DE/LB(Summerall) had flats responsibility, and would actually be in tight coverage with the receiver in the flats. The other WR would run a 15-20 yard hitch, and not have a defender within 10 yards of him coverage. That is how we gave up 2 of those 3rd and 15+ yard conversions. Our front seven is seemingly greatly improved, while our secondary still makes head scratching mistakes. We have secondary players jogging towards the football leading to that 3rd and 22 conversion on their drive to make it a 7 point game. At some point something has to change.
I have been concerned with his nonverbal demeaner as well. But I watched the Sunday games and noticed most pro QBs nowadays are very stoic on the sidelines, sitting alone, looking disengaged. I think the days of Tebow head butting defensive players or even Brady throwing tablets -- are being coached out of the position, probably due to social media influences of memes and bullying. I remember many a fan going nuts because Franks showed too much emotion/passion... seems you can't make everyone happy but AR definitely has some leadership gaps which many young people do. The pressure must be immense beyond our imagination. I just hope he is being supported by the right people. I think eventually he will be a gator great once he learns to say Eff it, I'm gonna be me, screw the rest of them.
