Watching this team I am scratching my head. Is it a run first team? Has CBN given up trying to feature AR? HBC’s 1st team did. Muschump regrettably did. I can’t figure words to describe what I see. Get used to this team scoring 24? or is it too early? Or are people saying next year we will know? BC Riley has SC with one; Leach, Kiffin, Dykes. Not so much-scUM, ND, OU. Riley and Kiffin have a 'wide open offense' identity. Leach teams have a 'poor man's Spurrier' look. A Nebraska asked me that question. I didn’t have an answer
It WILL NOT be in 2 years, cause you gonna have to score, A LOT, to win a Title. But, right now, our offense identity should be to run the ball behind a strong O LINE, and that includes 15 running. Defensively? Hate to say it, but don't give up big plays and hope the other offense makes a mistake. Special teams? Fair catch and stay in your lanes. Telling it like it is. We are a work in progress, we are nowhere near the talent level needed to win a Title. We will get there. Mark my words. Napier knows what we need, and he will get it.
This team does have an identity- it's called puberty. The coach is just starting out and as the head the team is. built around his philosophy. He has what he has to work with whether it's enough or not. I think as the team grows and the coach makes the decisions and changes you will see the personality change. We just have to give it a little time. I think the coach is trying to figure this team out too.
With Anthony Richardson's strong arm, Florida should try to stretch the field vertically as well as horizontally and take more shots for big plays than they have been while also being a ball-control offense that can move the chains consistently. If it's not there just dump it short to either the tight ends and/or running backs or even take off running. This first play below illustrates this point. As for the zone-read plays, AR seems to be running it kind of awkwardly and doesn't always make the right reads. Needs more work on that.
AR is a glass cannon. He is what he is. He's not a KJ Jefferson who dishes out the hits better than the defense. KJ is so hard to tackle the opposing defense actually recoils in pain by the 4th quarter. Not so with AR. He's big, he's athletic, but he's fragile. He can get hurt if a 150lb DB is tackling him or he could tweak a hammy running untouched to the sidelines. Some guys are like that. No fault of his. If I could put a force field around him on every play, he'd set records.
No, just like any other team caught up in a coaching merry-go-round. After 8 to 10 years of stability, yes.
I do not really know what this team is good at defensively, for all the good moments, there are bad moments. Offensively, we seem to run the ball well, but, that too, is boom and bust. Like when it was 3rd and four at the Missouri 30, Ithink we all knew it was going to be a run play. You would think given the down and distance aa good running team is going to pick up the first down or get really close. Trevor Etienne was stuffed for a loss. Like, I fel like our running game is designed to be like a Jim Tressel running attack, we just only really block it well occasionally; very straight forward, with the idea that the offensive player should win his match up all across the line and the play will be sucessful, but very little misdirection or suprise.
People often say that a team must develop an identity. But, I believe an identity develops on its own, based on the collective skill balance of the team. If an identity doesn't develop naturally, a team has no real strengths. I think our identity right now is the running game with three good backs, AR (however he happens to be playing that day), and Napier's propensity to take chances (e.g., 4th down calls). I believe eventually (after one or two more recruiting cycles) our identity will also include outstanding line play on both sides of the ball, as well as a heavy use of tight ends. All in good time.
Unfortunately, AR has been playing hurt and we have limited WR talent. Meanwhile, our running game has been a pleasant 3-headed surprise. This might be 'by design' since our defense is clearly a bit of a liability. CBN is trying to keep our offense on the field and give defense a rest.
I disagree whith AR being fragile. I think AR has been injured since last year and hasn't completely healed/recovered. Take a look at his runs from last year IMHO he ran with more authority and strength. This season it appears that he is avoiding running to protect himself so that he can stay on the field.
I am not sure about an identity (yet) but they do have some valuable characteristics or traits. Even when not playing well they compete and keep the games within striking distance. Each game I have felt that the score was closer than it should be or I cannot believe we are winning. identity will come when QB play is more consistent IMO. Go Gators!
The team is inconsistent and underperforming on so many levels that its simply impossible for them to form an identity.
Yes, we have an identity as a run-first play-action, deep pass team on offense and a simulated pressure, “spread defense”, but with poor execution. We still have enough athleticism to keep games close. If we had to sum up the identity of the team based on one person then it is Anthony Richardson. If he wakes up on the right side of the bed, the offense seems to do well.
