I believe it’s so poorly worded that he wakes up and realizes he’s made a bad statement.
I believe that he’s not so dumb to think he’ll be re-elected by saying things like this. I doubt he’s a racist based on one bad statement. I think he’s upset with the libbies loose stance on crime. That’s not a hot take IMO.

I don't know much about Tuberville other the fact that he was a football coach and is now a senator. But I do find it hard to believe he could be successful as a football coach is crudely racist. It does make me wonder if this is just something that develops when you are immersed in that culture, or whether he is playing to the crowd. We often blame leaders, and they're supposed to lead, but we should never lose sight of the fact that there is a pretty rotten core out there that is driving our view on race, immigration, etc.
