The real truth is that Democrats support loose immigration policies and they support policies that incentivize more illegal immigration. Most probably believe they're doing the right thing, but a majority of Democrats also don't want to deal with the negative consequences in their own back yard. They want and expect border cities and immigration hubs to deal with the bulk of the problems for them.

    Tough.

Because by calling yourself a "sanctuary city," you are saying that you will ignore federal law and you are all but telling immigrants, "cross the border, we'll take care of you."

Now you're mad because DeSantis and Abbott said "okay, here you go."

"But 715, they didn't get notice."

Well, border cities often-times don't get notice either.

The real truth is our Southern Border has never been "secure" throughout our history. We have 5X as many Border Patrol Agents than we had 40 years ago, and still, plenty of immigrants come in. We've also had an appetite for immigrant labor for generations too. 8 million plus undocumented in our workforce today. What we want isn't an open border with no restrictions. What we want is a sane, logical policy that allows the supply of immigrant labor to legally meet demand.

I live in metro Phoenix. Frankly, I don't give a crap if my yard guy and/or pool guy are documented or undocumented. I want to them to come on time and do a good job.

And that is about where the "tolerance" of illegal immigrants begin and end for a lot of Democrats. "Not in my backyard, unless they're mowing my lawn."

Bull. Who is telling immigrants anyone will take care of them once they get here. Know who did? DeSantis, who lied to the immigrants when he promised those there would be jobs waiting for them when they got to Martha's Vineyard.

And the border cities? They understand being on the border means a flow of immigrants, going both ways, on a daily basis. It's been going on for generations upon generations. Ever been to a border city? In a previous job, I had a satellite office in Nogales, about 500 yards away from the border crossing area. Used to come in during the morning when I was there and watch the hundreds of kids who lived on the Mexican side of the border, but had American citizenship cross to go to school around 8:15. Then, around 3:15, all return home. We called them little ants, marching in line, back and forth.

Want to help border cities? Approve of more asylum judges. Otherwise, border towns probably don't want or need your help. They tend to be very safe cities, and do just fine economically, as the movement of people also means commerce.

And frankly, not only do I not care who mows my lawn, I don't care if my neighbors are documented, undocumented, or from Mars. I don't care what language they speak, what food they cook, or anything, as long as they are at bare minimum, cordial to me and my family, and don't cause problems. I have no clue where my landscaper lives. Nor do I care to know. If he happens to be my neighbor, great. He's a hard worker, nice guy, and has a good sense of humor.

Liberals crack me up. When Biden sends plane loads of immigrants in the dead of night to cities that have no idea they are coming that's just fine but when DeSantis and Abbott send a few bus loads of immigrants to so called sanctuary cities they get hysterical. The good welcoming liberal folks of Martha's Vineyard had those immigrants out of their city in 24 hours. You can't have it both ways. Let's just shut down the border and all of this nonsense will go away. Of course in the words of Nancy Pelosi "We need all the immigrants we can get to pick the crops".

And how, pray tell, do you shut down the border that throughout this country's history, has never been shut down? A wall? Billion dollar boondoggle that can easily climbed over, under, or cut through! The only way the border will ever be shut down is full military commitment, with thousands of troops patrolling 24/7. Anyone willing to commit to that?

And if you really believe most Republicans care on a micro level... like their neighbors... then you really don't understand Republicans.

Republicans care on a macro level because there are significant consequences on a macro level.

Most Republicans, most Democrats, most Americans know that most of these people are just trying to build a better life for them and/or their family. There's no hatred there. There's just bad consequences if we don't control the border and just let everybody come through.

It is always amazing to me that the group of people who claim that they support smaller government and claim to support free markets think that massively expanding government on the border will stop people from providing labor supply where it is demanded when their alternative is to live in dangerous situations.

    True or false:

Democrats support government programs for the poor, jobs for illegal immigrants, affordable housing (including for illegal immigrants), medicaid expansion (including for illegal immigrants) with ambitions for medicare for all, and they overtly state that they will not enforce federal immigration law.

If that's not messaging that they will "take care of them" I don't know what is.

If I didn't know better, Democrats now sound like the "obstructionist" party.

What's your solution for securing the border? And don't tell me work visas, that doesn't secure the border, that incentivizes more people to cross it.

There is nothing that will "secure the border" because it is a moving target with no reachable definition. There will always be people that cross the border. The number that do will primarily be driven by how terrible the conditions are in other countries and how many jobs there are in the US for immigrants to fill. It is not primarily driven by how many border patrol agents we hire, how many miles of wall we build, or how many bad things about immigrants a political leader says.

This is actually a great argument in favor of loose immigration policy.

The smaller the welfare state in America, the less of an economic problem that illegal immigration presents. The bigger the welfare state in America, the more of an economic problem that illegal immigration presents.

Problem is, we don't really have a lot of Milton Friedman types on the left.

So what are Republicans for? Allowing the poor to fend on their own with no assistance, no affordable housing, no jobs, and no health insurance? Sounds like a real utopia:confused:

The plan for the border is what two bi-partisan groups came up with. 2007 and the Gang of 8 in 2013. An expanded guest worker program with an eventual pathway to citizenship should the immigrants so choose. And no, a guest worker program has no pull to bring more immigrants in. These immigrants are coming anyway, and are being pushed out of their home country due to any combinations of war, poverty, famine, gang violence, and more. By allowing the immigrant labor here to legally find work they are currently finding anyway, we are simply making a process legal and more streamlined. All the while, we can start collecting increased taxes by the way of more guest worker fees. If the 8 million undocumented just pay $5 week for a visa, that equals about $2 billion a year.

The border has never been secure. But we once had an effective guest worker program (Bracero), that bought millions in legally to work. Sadly, the racist backlash to the Civil Rights Era brought about the end of this program and the start of treating Hispanic people very poorly (see Operation Wetback). But since then, millions of immigrants have still come over the border looking for work, and everything we have tried to stop them has failed. We should stop tilting at windmills, and instead work to better control the flow of immigrants that are coming regardless of what we do.
