One, it is a bar. It was not quiet anyway. Two, they were pretty rude about it. They chose to eat at the bar, which is fine, but don’t expect silence and privacy at a bar.

    We are in Boston today.

Not really the point of the thread but as a side note, it has been a bit of a bizarre trip. While there have been some cool experiences, my wife’s boss’s wife has made a point to tell my wife (while I’m not around) of how she perceives me as rigid and doesn’t understand how I married her. Really making my wife uncomfortable. Needless to say this will be the last of our vacations together.

    currently in Maine.

Updating this 10/5: forgetting about the stupid video phone talking at the bar, after a week of spending a vacation with a couple with opposite political views, who wear the views on their sleeve - I don’t know if I can do that again. Every half hour or some some out of the blue comment about BLM or liberals of Biden. I try to ignore it, but sometimes you just can’t and then when you refute their “facts” they get butthurt.

It amazes me that people watch Fox News and OAN and similar disinformation and then walk around and proudly exhibit they are grossly misinformed. You can’t even really make any headway with them. It becomes part of their identity and they become miserable company.

IMHO, life is way, way, way too short for that shit. Having to endure assclowns day by day is bad, no one needs that shit on vaca. oh, I am sorry you had to do that.

    Nice try. ;)

I know you are joking but I almost never FaceTime, except with my son, who is usually calling from his iPad.

I'm very picky about who I travel with. Too much risk that the wrong people ruin a vacation. Of course, that doesn't mean I refuse to travel with Republicans. Just that I have to know I like being around a person before I'll travel with them.

Sounds like a work trip more than a vacation regardless.... lighten up and find something about the trip to enjoy or else you will be seen as a grumpy and rigid man. :D

Seriously, you already understand the situation you're in so don't let it bother you.

Also why does everyone take politics so personal these days? Why can't we just respectfully disagree and then drink a beer together? Then I can make liberal jokes and whoever else can make conservative jokes and it's fine. You're entitled to your opinion as am I. It doesn't mean that I'm right and you're wrong or vice-versa.

This idea that if I vote a certain way means we can't be friends is a big part of the divisiveness we see today.

People have been brain washed and the opposite party vilified to the point that people cannot separate politics from the person any more. Ad campaigns, policies, politicians, problems/solutions etc have been beaten into people's consciousness. Rarely if ever do politicians or slanted news cites promote positive action or solutions but instead point fingers as to why the problem exists and why it's "their" fault.

I've watched my parents who used to be very moderate conservatives become brainwashed by Fox News. Now I catch them watching OAN or news max. I can't even listen to it because everything refers to dems as leftists, cry babies, etc and even use memes or other derogatory graphics to vilify everything democrat. It's like a homecoming pep rally.

And I've mentioned this before but my oldest sister and her family are the same but opposite party. There is NO middle ground. I've seen my parents and their friends share political memes and falsehoods that take jabs at the other side. My wife and I have a very small handful of friends that we communicate with because so many people have become so extremely polarized.

There is no changing people because no one has more time or influence with them than 24 hour news media...

    I get it.

It's also not just Fox News that's the problem. CNN and MSNBC aren't exactly helping things. Throw in very influential left leaning social media companies and there are more problems.

I still have some very liberal friends. We go to dinner, play golf, watch football, drink beer together and politics are just never a problem like what is being described on this "vacation".

Yes we debate issues, yes we take easy political pop shots at each other but at the end of the day we're still friends. I've never carried a feeling of "if you vote for candidate X then we can no longer be friends" but it seems to be more and more of a thing with people.

I said as much in my comment. Absolutely both sides. My comment may have focused on fox but that's just because I see it at my parents more often as they are local. I seey parents friends sharing derogatory memes about republicans. My parents are good people even if misguided at the moment but their democrat friends often share memes that insult all pubs indiscriminately. Its a shame really. In any event it's pure venom. I miss the days as a kid where my parents would watch the nightly news then it was movies or TV shows the rest of the night. Now it's constant hate filled opinion pieces 24 7

I stopped watching TV news well over a year ago. I had watched mostly Fox. I watched Fox because I knew that the networks, CNN, MSNBC were left biased. Then I realized that Fox was the same as they were just from the other perspective. I used to like Hannity and Colmes. I don’t care for Hannity in the solo show. O’ Reilly was good in that he brought on good guests from both sides to discuss issues.

Our news today has become 24/7 informercials rather than honest reporting and analysis. It’s a shame. Ron Popeil had more credibility peddling Pocket Fisherman and Slicer Dicers than our current journalists/news media have reporting on important issues that effect everyone.

I found this a year or so ago and found it to be very prescient of Carson. In his day, Carson was probably bigger than Colbert, Kimmel, and Fallon combined. Hard to argue that his successors have not fallen into the exact trap he describes to one extent or another.
