If so, that would be unfortunate. However, I don’t think that would hold up. The Supreme Court didn’t make abortion illegal, they gave it back to the states. Taking the power away from the states to decide that issue would be a contradiction of their recent ruling on the issue.

I am pretty sure the the SC does not have the power to give it back to the states & this not what they ruled. McConnell has already proposed fed legislation.

McConnell can propose all he wants. It does not mean it will come to fruition. Each side proposes things all the time they know will never see the light of day. As for the Supreme Court, that is exactly what they did, which is why abortion is still perfectly legal in many states and not so much in others. The states are in control now.

Talk of Political violence is not just among the paramilitary 2nd amendment groups. It seems to reside also within some who’s reason’etre seems to be that the 2020 election was stolen from trump. When ma and pa are talking openly about taking up arms is it not conceivable that the idea is more widespread than we imagine.
US midterms: The Trump voters who see a coming storm — BBC News

Karen and Steve don't want to take up arms. But if Republicans lose in November this elderly Arizona couple say a civil war is coming and, yes, they will fight. They have discussed it between them, and feel that taking up arms is their best option. It was at this point that our conversation grew a little dark and my faith in the strength of American democracy grew a little shaky.

We talked about history, the economy and even abortion. But it was only when I questioned their belief that the 2020 election was stolen that things got tense. Wasn't it possible, I asked, that millions of Americans just didn't like President Trump and so Joe Biden won the election?

It was Karen who responded, with a distinctly steely glint: "If you're a crazy liberal, we're just not interested. The central news, let me call them, I'm not going to call them fake news, but it is fake news to say that America doesn't like Trump. America loves Trump."

It will start on a small scale, it will be like town against a town, state against a state," Steve had clearly thought this through. People have been tossing this idea of a second American civil war around for a couple of years now, ever since the 2020 election, ever since the violence of the Capitol Riots on 6 January, 2021.

I don’t think the SC can make it a state issue. They can only say whether it is constitutionally protected or not. Pretty sure it could be legislated federally.

edit. I just searched the opinion for "states' rights". It does not show up.

We have some good legal minds here, that should be able to help. I bet @gator_lawyer is a lawyer.

That’s right, uncle Joe is in the shtr, no policies, opec just flicked him off, border is clearly under control, inflation is not that bad, new Hunter with Joe stuff coming out. Lol. When in doubt pull up something old about trump. I guess when u can’t run on anything it’s time to run away.

States have always had and will always have jurisdiction to create, enact and enforce their own laws. There is not a federal law which supersedes state law as it relates to abortion. Has nothing to do with the Civil War.

    1. I posted the story because I thought the fact that more Americans are talking about civil war is a valid subject to discuss on a political message board.
    2. I posted the NYT story today because it came out today.
    3. I posted it on an existing thread because I thought that was better than starting a new thread.

    anything else?

The regurgitation of propaganda talking points is so ingrained now has become “thought” . Just my weekly rant on where talk radio led us.

Trump already announced that the "guy on the right" will be part of his ticket, either his Secretary of State or Vice President.

We are in a weird timeline where I can't read that sentence and immediately dismiss it as humor and not meant to be taken as a statement of fact.

Trump didn't really do this, did he?

Oh Yes and the Promise Keepers will control the United States Military.

NY State and California will be walled off and be internment camps ala escape from NY and LA.

I kid of course but does anyone doubt for 1 second what that madman would do and whom he would appoint if he won again?

The coronation would make Napoleons seem like Sam Adam's victory speech post G Washington.
