I have consulted for many schools over the past two decades. Up through middle school kids are absolutely reading aloud many different types of books. From Fahrenheit 451 to Hatchet to The Giver. So many option that do not have the N word in them. Were you around and upset when Huckleberry Finn… an American classic… was taken out of school libraries? In this thread alone we have some complaining that TEACHERS can’t teach these books in their classrooms. Others are claiming that these books aren’t being taught in the classroom. I don’t want any book banned from a library. I also do not want teachers trying to teach some of these books in the classrooms.
Shame on parents for getting involved in their own kids education and not wanting them exposed to certain issues in elementary school. Shame on them. Lol So you don’t think there’s a single book that should be banned in an elementary library?
My type? LOL Your reading comprehension REALLY needs work. If a parent doesn’t want their child to read a book, that’s their business. What’s NOT their business is deciding for other parents. Not really sure why you can’t comprehend that. The books in an elementary school library are vetted by elementary media specialists, not racist right wingers. Books that are in a high school library are not the same as those in an elementary school library. I’m sorry you’re struggling with this.
You may not be aware but there is an attack on libraries at all levels of school in addition to public libraries

I am aware and don’t like that local libraries are being targeted. The only thing I’d warn is don’t complain when some crazy nazi, racist, Jewish and liberal hating person wants their book at the local library. A book that doesn’t do anything but call for the killing of them all and how to do it. Be careful what you ask for.

Have you seen the videos? These are not concerned parents. They are hardened political activists. Obviously there are exceptions, but by and large, all of the recent momentum is from hateful activists who just want to hurt people
Our kids are avid readers and spend a ton of time at the library. Schools are also known to have libraries and they get books from there also. I am willing to bet Because there should never be limits to accessibility unless it is pornographic. Our kids are not precious little angels living in a bubble..they know the world around them and books bring it all to a sensible point. I suggest that these bizarre "offended" laws are nothing more than religious posturing by those fearing that very same world.
You fear knowledge and fear ones ability to digest facts. Giess the Trump thing should strike fear in us all at how easy it is to brainwash and they know that books create open discussion and always have. It a slow roll to questioning. Isnt that a fact that creates harmony? You can find it in novels but not on Fox. I am against my kids being exposed to Christian prayer in school...do we fight to ban it? No...we teach our kids to pray to Allah and show understanding of orher faiths all the while knowing that a Fundamentalist Christian muttered "they are going to hell'. This is an oversimplification of the issue. School boards are elected by the community and typically represent the general standards of said community. There is usually critical thought required when hearing, "OHMERGERD X BOOK WAS BANNED OHMERGERD!" Oftentimes, a book is only restricted from certain grade levels. If you want your 7 year old to read Thirteen Reasons Why or The Rape of Nanking or Sex Plus: Learning, Loving, and Enjoying Your Body or even the Bible there is nothing stopping you from going to Amazon right now and ordering those books.
My wife is a teacher who had a student in class that was a 14 year old white girl who had heard so much hip-hop music and all her peers quoting lyrics that she honestly did not know that it was inappropriate to use the n word. Books that use terminology which is viewed as racially-charged are usually restricted for reasons such as this.
This is also an oversimplification. Currently, the folks screaming the loudest are not representative of the community. I will tell you from personal experience that although there is an actual process to review books some principals will just pull a book without going through the proper channels because they don't want the headache.

Access is available at the library. I don’t fear knowledge and think it needs to be taught at the appropriate age levels. That includes CRT, racism in all forms, etc., including Henry Aaron’s book and others like it. I grew up with blacks starting at age 5. It was a blessing. My association with my black friends allowed me to witness racism as I heard them called N and myself a N lover. Most of my family was racist from my dad to his 5 brothers, cousins too. I have a biracial granddaughter living in southern Georgia. When she and I go out together you should see the looks we get from some people. The disgusts just emanates from their faces. Not all but more than enough. I can understand your discomfort being Muslim and having to hear a prayer from another faith. For that reason I think a moment of silence is appropriate for all to pray or just reflect. My faith is Christian. I have friends that are atheist, one who thinks I’m being foolish to believe in a Christian God. He’s one of my best friends who is like a brother to me. I’m not a Trump fan. I think he’s the biggest AH I’ve ever seen in politics and that says a lot. Did I vote for him. Yes. I’ll never do it again. Again ,,, I do not watch tabloid news like Fox, CNN, or MSNBC, except at presidential election time. I watch local Bay News 9 at 6pm and ABC world News at 6:30. All other news I get from my IPhone. Due to the N word becoming such a derogatory word that has caused people to kill each other, lose their jobs over, be shunned by society, lose friends over, and use just to be mean, I don’t think any book with it is appropriate in an elementary age library. Elected by the community? Does not preclude national interest of community standards. To suggest that because some folks vote for their cousin that they can put into place local religious or personal anarchy is just wrong. Funny thing is i heard that exact reasoning from a nice guy but devout conservative last week. Betting the "but the community voted for them" moniker has been well placed to override common decency of full representation.
True but it begs the question about WHY it’s being reviewed. My guess is that the Moms for Liberty types are uncomfortable with the way Hank Aaron was treated and don’t want their children, or any children for that matter, to know the truth. I would be interested to know who/what organization initiated the review. I really hope that my “guess” is incorrect.
