Actually at least up until around 2005-2010 he was driving a beat up Toyota. He did build an eight figure office in his house on Lake Washington though.

 

I would argue that he is a scientist, a data scientist. That’s a major component of climate science.

On climate change, we need to lean on scientists who are trained experts on the subject. Regarding Covid, we need to rely on trained and experienced medical doctors and again, scientists.

Bill Gates is a computer geek (and sex pervert) who is not an expert on either subject. His opinion is meaningless to me.

In what way does he disagree with the consensus of experts on either topic? In terms of public health, he does run a pretty major public health focused charity. In general, his charities seem to hire experts on topics and he seems to mostly echo them.

 

Climate change is not one singular field of science. It's oceanography, meteorology, physics, chemistry and mathematics/data analytics. No one person is an expert in all those fields. The intersection is the aggregation and translation of data. Gates and his team have considerable expertise in that world.

My brother has a PhD in engine research design but currently works on top secret projects for the government involving electronics, something for which he has no formal training. I guess like Gates he doesn’t have any expertise in that. Someone should tell the agency he works with.
