Why in the world would “Of Mice & Men?” be banned? WTH?

Maybe… and I do not agree with this… but maybe because of the murder of Lennie by his friend George?

None of these books should be banned. The reason for banning should be the rating system so I, as a parent, can decide if the book is appropriate for my child. The movie rating system is pretty good. If it’s rated R, then I want to know why.

You as a parent have every right to introduce your kids to any of these books. They can all be had quite easily. Some do not want overworked underpaid teachers trying to APPROPRIATELY teach these books.

I am missing your point. Are you suggesting that these books should not be in school libraries?

I am suggesting that as a parent.. and grandparent… I provided my kids and grandkids with books… many that school libraries do not carry due to someone getting upset. Whether it is the N word, suicide, abuse, whatever reason, i as a parent have the ability to provide these books for my family. Public libraries, Amazon, books a million, etc… most can be had for free..
I would greatly prefer to provide these types of books and the lessons they can teach instead of relying on underpaid overworked stressed out teachers that are often incapable of doing a good job of teaching the lessons.

Appropriately teaching these books is a teacher’s job. Define what YOU mean by appropriate.

Handling the questions, concerns and arguments that can arise.. without political agenda shadowing the context. Most teachers today don’t have time to do much more than read a few pages in class and move on. Trachers do not want to deal with parents, grandparents etc… being upset or offended. Tap dancing around the school board, principal and everyone else that feels they have a say in what is taught. So instead of a good lesson plan, an in depth discussion, Kids get glossy cover and shallow look at most of these books.

I believe that we are talking about books that are being banned from school libraries. There is a huge difference between that and textbooks that are used in class. Many kids are not going to have the opportunity to visit a public library. I certainly can see not having Lady Chatterly’s Lover or Fifty Shades of Gray in a school library. That’s not really banning books. However, as for pretty much the rest of the banned books, they shouldn’t be banned. If a parent doesn’t want a kid reading certain books that are in the school library, then the parent can deal with the kid. Whether it’s a Mark Twain book or a book about Hank Aaron, no parent should have the right to dictate to a school that the book should be removed from the library.

    1. Are you a census taket? 2. I care.

    1. Yes i do live in Florida right here in Central Florida. 2. I have kids in the school system. 3. Nether Desantis nor fundamentalist MAGA driven religious groups represent anything that i believe in when deciding what is or isnt acceptable for my kids to read. Parental rights pertains to who exactly? Fact is..the design is to allow the freaks of Christianity to cleanse the evil writings from the schools. It is what it is. The real world exists even if those folks think blinders will hide it.

The only freaks are those unhinged leftist. I get you lost everything in that great country you used to brag about and now your life is miserable but quit blaming everybody else for your poor decisions in life. All your post and comments are of anger, go get some counseling and be thankful you're living in the best country in the world and one of the best states. In this country it's easy to restart and make a go of it again

i lost nothing. i have my family! Have a great job! Great kids! It is very presumtious of you to assume again.
Seems to me my decisions were doing just fine but i along with hundreds of thousands of businesses worldwide were blindsided by Covid. One would call that an unplanned for event you think?
8 1/2 years in the Maldives seems to be a huge accomplishment. How many times did you live there? Operated a business there? What about living (not visiting) Grenada? St.Vincent? St. Croix? Turks and Caicos? Seychelles? Korea?
Or have you been to Thailand 13 times? Sri Lanka? .Dubai? Oman? Paris? Qatar? London? Plus served 12 years in the USAF! So much anger from all that.....cmon girlfriend you are really pulling at your bra straps to find something negative about my life. Most people know this so its time to clue you in...sitting behind a keyboard is not business. Business is luck, timing, risks. It is not wasting away on message boards which is why i put all my "panties in a wad" (very original comment from your end) and stay away from here. That simple.

I would visit it but would never want to live there, already in the best country in the world. That's awesome you were able to live in all those countries and make a great living. Why didn't save some of those earnings? Or was it a bad investment or living beyond your means?
To blame it all on Covid is BS, but yes it played a roll.
I also had a business, a very successful one and yes Covid affected my business but by being wise not by luck as you claim our business survived and I was able to pay all my employees regular pay during the shutdown (because I've been shut down before from hurricanes) because of being smart and saving for bad times that's what wise business people do, some business just can't like restaurants and the hotel industry do t the forced shut downs but a lot of them were barely getting by already
Your panties are not in a wad but bunched up your angry ass. You've always been angry on TH.
Here's some good advice now that you're making great money as you claim, start saving some for a rainy day that way you don't have to worry or rely on the good luck.
So, when are you moving back to paradise and getting out of this shit hole.
I did just get back from a 16-day trip from Italy and as much as I loved it, I wouldn't want to live there

Unless we are talking very young elementary school kids, teachers don’t read entire books to their students. The kids get assigned the book, then write a book report or have a classroom discussion maybe focused on a few passages in the book. This would usually be under the purview of the English teacher. Not sure why they “wouldn’t have time” to do their one and only job.

Not really relevant here as we are talking banned books from school libraries, effectively banning from the premises - and in todays world, perhaps banned from digital e-reader services offered through libraries, though I’m not sure if any of these localities and wannabe book burners have capability over that. In extreme cases we may see them cut off access to those services, just as a few extremists counties thought it better to close their public library to “save” kids from the books.
