I understand that Coach Golden has been steadily working to spread the floor with Castleton . . . who has been working on developing his 3-point shot much more during this past off-season. If he can become a consistent threat from the arc . . . or even mid-range . . . he and our Gators will be very tough to defend. Anybody else hearing this?
Well, it would certainly be good for CC's pro prospects. I wonder, though, how frequently a player who has had no success from the arch suddenly becomes an adequate threat.
Wasn't he 0-for-last year from the 3? If he can just get coached-up to make 20-25% from downtown and maybe double that from mid-range . . . consistently . . . and things change big time trying to defend him (and so the Gators). Plus his stock goes up a LOT. Maybe I'm dreaming. LOL!
Consider me a skeptic until he shows that kind of range. We did begin to see a good midrange shot last season. I don't want the Gators sacrificing possessions, though, in an attempt to enhance CC's NBA prospects.
I agree and would only think Coach Golden will allow it if it stems from the regular offense. Quite a bit of free-wheeling by most last year I think.
Castleton reportedly shot well from the NBA three point line working out for a several teams prior to the 2021 NBA Draft.
We have to remember that everybody seemed to shoot worse behind the arc for White, especially those reliant on good ball movement to open up shots in which the shooter was actually in good position to score. He was never good at developing quality 3 point shots through the offense.
One of the best post players in the SEC and we are hoping he improves from 3...if he takes 10 or more shots from 3 this year that is too many. Why don't we run some plays posting up Myreon Jones on the low blocks as well while we are at it.
I think at 20-25% it would be pointless, as teams would likely just let him shoot and collapse on defense. In order to really spread the floor I think he'd have to shoot at least 33% (2-pt equiv of 50%). I can see maybe 2-3 shots per game. Any more and you're starting to take your best offensive post player away from what he does best
Agree, wrote mine before I saw yours...though I think 2-3 per game max is doable if he hits at a decent rate.
It may depend on the competition. If he is dominating in the low post then why move him. But if he is getting muscled out of the post or struggling against a big man, then by all means put him out beyond the arc.
I believe the answer is simple. He came back (yes, he had a injury) because he heard he needed to be one of those centers who defends okay in the middle but has to shoot the 3 to get on the floor at the next level. He is using this year to both work on his future as well as help Golden get the program up and running. Nothing wrong with what is happening. What we need is for JJ and Felder to be stout and agile enough to play the 5 for some time to allow him to roam the 3-line. Methinks it will mainly work. Not that CC will shoot it well on any game, just that we won't look bad inside as a result. Until further notice, Golden is NOT White. Like Napier is NOT Dumbo.
Team success in any sport depends on remaining injury free. Don’t like reliance on the three point shot for team success, especially the last few years when we had a poor shooting team from free throw line and beyond ARC. We were also too small. Need more Fudge like athletes on roster each year. Also concerned me that guys like Stokes and Jit never lost weight under White regime. Jit looks to be in much better shape and slimmed down under Golden crew. Excited for season.
He has to have the range. It's not that far of a shot. It's just inconceivable to me that a guy with his form and ability to knock down free throws at 73% for his career can't hit three pointers. He just needs to attempt more than one every three games. Once he knocks down a few, he'll be fine.
All the best big men shoot the three now. It does more than add three points to the score. It also brings the biggest defender out of the paint and opens up the middle for other players. Just because he is great in the post doesn’t mean he shouldn’t evolve into a more complete offensive player.
It's not like we want him taking 3-4 shots a game from there or playing outside the arc all game. If his shot looks good and he is comfortable taking it from there, then I am fine with him having the freedom to do so. Worst-case, he takes and misses 15-20 of them over the season, or maybe goes 10-40 or something, but you are forcing defenses to play him because they know it theoretically can go in. That will also open lots of passing lanes, which is where he will be far more deadly, IMO. Think of it like a pocket passer in football: you run the read option or sprint option a couple of times a game knowing that it may or may not work, but the defense has to be aware of it, prep for it, and actually stop it. But I highly doubt the staff expects him to become a stretch five overnight.
In the five out this is part of the regular offense, and an important part. If Colin can make the three it forces the center to come all the way out to guard him, which gives us back door and other drive opportunities with no defenders down low. If he can’t shoot it, the center sags, and those back doors and drives are much more limited. So it will be important that he’s at least a credible threat.
I just want him to show in the first 10 games that, if left alone, he can make 30% of his 3s. That will draw out the defense and open up the driving lanes. It won't be like the lunchtime drive-thru lane at McDonalds, where you wait and wait and wait, only to end up with a greasy bag of sh*t.
I am OK with CC taking WIDE open threes as a set shot. I just don't want to ever see him taking a contested three as a jump shot unless there is almost no time on the shot clock.
