Updating this 10/5: forgetting about the stupid video phone talking at the bar, after a week of spending a vacation with a couple with opposite political views, who wear the views on their sleeve - I don’t know if I can do that again. Every half hour or some some out of the blue comment about BLM or liberals of Biden. I try to ignore it, but sometimes you just can’t and then when you refute their “facts” they get butthurt.

It amazes me that people watch Fox News and OAN and similar disinformation and then walk around and proudly exhibit they are grossly misinformed. You can’t even really make any headway with them. It becomes part of their identity and they become miserable company.

    Previous:
I’m in Rhode Island on vacation. We are with a couple who is nut job election stolen conservative couple. But regardless we are at restaurant bar sitting at the bar drinking stolis. It isn’t a quiet place. Anyway friend /wife of friend calls somebody FaceTime at the bar as a follow up to our conversation. Then a older couple (my age) at the bar decides to complain to that she is talking on a phone at the bar. Friend and wife are pretty upset and decide to leave, but that’s not how I roll. They leave but I circle back and politely starting thanking them for making our experience miserable and calling them out for the douchebags that they were. Of course it makes them very uncomfortable, which was exactly my intention.

I don’t know what is wrong with people these days, but I don’t walk away from their bullshit. I am going to make them as uncomfortable as they have made us.

I’m just putting this out there for fun to see what the reaction is. As much as I lean leftish, I have no patience for people who are such babies who are going to Play them The victim.

it is my wife’s boss and wife. They drive me nuts, but in this case their politics had nothing to do with it. I don’t like their political views but in a sense they are my tribe. They were attacked and I don’t take kindly to it.

FTing (or, talking on speaker)in most public places deserves an attack. Buy that couple a round on me. IMO, it is particularly rude to you & your wife.

Last week we were at a restaurant and a couple in their late 50s early 60s were face timing with their 2 year old (my guess) grand kid and just kept going on and on and on with baby talk.

I wasn't sure if I should be mad at them or embarrassed for them but it was pretty rude and funny at the same time.

Social rules if etiquette are often interpreted differently by different age groups.
I tend to ignore what others are doing and even when I’m irritated by it as long as it is harmless… I don’t respond or say anything.
The old couple complaining where being old people complaining.. laugh at them and ignore them.
As for talking on FaceTime or speaker.. it’s annoying but so what? It’s not harming me or others.
Now I once saw a guy at football game cuss a kid out because the kid was selling candy bars and asked if he wanted one. The guy started screaming and cussing the kid out because he had diabetes or something…
I didn’t know the kid but that man and I had a long talk …

Speakerphone in a public place drives me nuts.
Go outside, take them off speaker, or, and I know this is a radical idea, actually be in the moment where you are.
Not sure I would have said something, but I get where they are coming from.

If it’s a noisy bar then no big deal. It’s just one more voice amongst many. In a restaurant or on a plane? F whoever does that.

Believe it or not I am pretty much non confrontational in person, but if somebody confronts me I usually leave with an F-you then turn my back and walk off.

Maybe I'm not appreciating what happened because I don't have the context. Why were they so upset over a person asking them to stop facetiming at the bar? That seems hypersensitive.

That's kinda where I'm at. If the conversation is the same volume as everyone else's, I'm not sure why it matters. Those folks who think everyone else needs to hear their conversations are annoying whether they're on the phone, using a speaker phone, or talking in person.

Assuming this is an AITA question. My answer is no, you're not. It was none of the other couple's business what your "friend" was doing as long as it wasn't disruptive to the bar. I'd have done the same thing you did.

Anyone who isnt on their phone at a bar is missing out. Ive discovered some pretty good local brews using the untapped app in different places.

    It's a game changer.

    (Its also 100% silent ;))
