I don't usually get involved in these sorts of threads. In 1997/8 I lived a few miles from the S. Ute Indian tribe rez. I taught at a college that had 10% NAs in part cuz tuition was free b/c the college had previously been one of those horrible places that indians had been forcibly sent to assimilate. My first job as a consultant was for the tribe. The tribe which already paid some county taxes voluntarily to be good citizens, wanted me to assess the impact of the tribe getting rights to the NG (I will not get in the legal complications) on some non-rez land & what that would do to the county b/c La Plata county heavily relied on those NG taxes & of course the tribe would not have to pay them, but were concerned over the impact to the county. In the course of my work, I interviewed the chamber of commerce folks, the area bankers & area ranchers. Having come from an extremely racist family even I was shocked at the level of hate & racism these folks expressed right to my face. They hated the tribe/Indians. The individual Indians that I got to know from multiple tribes were treated like shit. The only people from the tribe side that expressed any frustration were the 2 white,hotshots (those guys were smart as hell. that tribe is a power player in energy now) they'd just hired from Exxon. Fast forward 12 years later. I became friends with Soloman Little Owl. At the time he lived In Eaton, CO & had 2 young kids. He was the head of UNCs Native American Union. His kids would've had to go to Eaton High, home of the Reds. He was active in trying to change the name, in part, b/c his girls already were the targets of racism. He became sorta well know for his intramural BB team, The Fightin' Whites. Soloman is a Crow. I went up to the rez in Montana with him for 3 days & took part in a Buffalo hunt. A friend of his - a Lakota - met up with us. Over a 12 hour drive into the Big Horn Mts. they both recounted the violence & hate they'd experienced. The Lakota guy had gone to North Dakota where he took part in the effort to change their name. They did not honor the Sioux tribe, they threw shit at them & called them/the Lakota guy, etc. names. I don't recall the specifics of the conversations (this was 12 years ago), but it left me understanding why they resented being treated as mascots & like shit in the places represented by those same mascots. Soloman put his family first & moved back to the rez where he is the CEO. 10 miles S. of me is Loveland HS, home of the Chiefs. In their cafeteria there is a snack wigwam. Went to many gym meets there. The girls whoo, whoo, whoo with the hand slapping lips when 1 of their team runs to do the vault. Who could that offend? It's just good fun. Why so sensitive? 1 time when announcing the medals: Olivia, Kate, Emma, Deer Killer....gee I wonder. Native Americans have been treated like absolute shit in this country and MANY are treated like absolute shit to this very day. Out here, they don't want their kids to have to sit in a cafeteria that depicts them as cartoons, etc. God forbid they are so sensitive. God forbid they are so thin skinned. What a bunch of wokesters. Maybe so, but let's compare their trials & tribulations to YOURS. Your team had to change its name. YOUR TEAM HAD TO CHANGE ITS NAME. That is so onerous & you are so victimized, that you came to TH to share this horrible hardship that you have to endure. Oh, the injustice. Oh, the humanity. Poor you. They were killed, seperated, forced to relocate & then relocate again & again. their women were raped & their children taken. I have no idea what woke has to do with the Guardians other than MAGAts have to work it into every conversation.
On the fans side it impacts nothing other than maybe some new chants and logos. On the cultural side it has an actual impact. So go with that. Why not? It's just a mascot. They could change the Gators to the Otters and the Dolphins to the Flamingos. Nothing else changes. I'm still a fan.

First off, baseball is boring. Secondly, whatever you think of the name question, I think the point of the OP is that the Cleveland baseball team's fans(the people who actually pay the organization's bills) didn't call for the name change. Most of the people who called for the name change are people who weren't fans before and didn't magically become fans just because of the name change. Thus it's a decision that will likely result in a net loss of customers. That's simply an observation. I'm not taking a side here.
Your observation would be wrong. My brother lives in the area and is a huge fan, goes to games, buys their stuff, the whole bit. After an initial stink everyone is good with it, they’re in the playoffs
