The "designed" word is stupid. The rest is correct. The sound is manufactured, and it has been used by men looking to control women's bodies. But yes, that was not its initial intent. If she had just said "used" she would have been correct. She shouldn't have said "designed."

Because most doctors had us convinced it was a heartbeat and my guess is most parents still think they heard one because thats what our doctors called it?

Because entire nations have heath care systems that call it a beating heart?

    Those are a couple reasons.

Sure, and then when we learn that the simple version isn't technically correct, we can insist that it really is, or learn what is technically correct.

There we go! That wasn't so hard.

Now maybe we can discuss the women who also consider it a heartbeat. :)

Indeed it wasn't. Just like it wouldn't be hard to correct the claim that you made that she blamed the sound on men. So...let's see if you can...

No. We can learn from the technicality. Who said we cant? (I mean we still have a lot of medical folks calling it a heartbeat, but..

Regardless, What does any of that have to do with the made up lie that Ms. Abrams told?

So you think...that she thinks...that WOMEN manufactured the sound "for that purpose" so that men could control womens bodies?

So if I am wrong and shes not blaming the sound on men, who is she blaming it one?

I guess it was too hard to accurately report her quote...the "men" in the quote were not the group that designed the sound, despite your claim. So I guess it really was pretty hard to make that sort of an admission. ;)

She said it was manufactured for that purpose. Did women manufacture it for that purpose? Ms. Abrams is claiming either men or women did it for the purpose of men having control. Which one did that?

She made no such claim as to whom did it in her quote. The only mention of men is in who used the sound. As I said, it must be really, really hard to admit you were wrong and misquoted her. ;)

a true statement can be a dumb statement & an untrue statement can be a smart statement, hence, truth is a weird litmus test for whether a statement is dumb or not.

am I the only married person on here?

You are inferring a claim that she did not make. Maybe she intended it, but you're pretending that your interpretation was her actual spoken statement.

I agree it was stupid for Abrams to say "designed" and single out "men" for trying to control women's bodies.

But she's right that it's not a heart beat, and she's right that many pretend it is a heartbeat to elicit more emotional response to the abortion issue, often as part of an effort to enact draconian abortion bans starting at 6 weeks, which does effectively exert control over women's bodies. And while there are certainly women involved in these efforts, as well, the vast majority of legislators at the state and federal level pushing this position are, in fact, men.

For the record, I also think that it's willfully and deliberately pedantic to dissect comments to such a particular degree as you've attempted in both this thread and the one about Biden's pandemic claims on 60 Minutes. "I'm outraged by the exact words that ____ used. If they'd just changed 2 or 3 words with other words effectively meaning the same thing, it would be fine."

Or she didn't say anything about that. Indeed, a weird hill to die on. But there you are. Not willing to admit that you misquoted her (or lied about her quote, to use the same standard you used on her to avoid hypocrisy).

Relax man. @mdgator05 and I have these debates all the time. They are often about semantics. It's a message board for debate and I dont think either of us loses any sleep over it.

...But a few words changes the entire meaning of a comment.

I didnt "quote" her. I did interpret what I think she meant. Guilty of that one.

Bottom line, you are wrong about listening to heart beats at six weeks at an OB appointment.

I'm not sure what about my post implied I'm not relaxed. I don't really get bent out of shape with political discussions.

I'm just pointing out that you seem caught up on distinctions without material difference this week related to comments made by Democrats. And also, in regards to this topic, you're acting like your interpretation of a statement is the only possibly correct one, despite it requiring quite a bit of inference on your part to arrive at said interpretation.

Lol. The doctors called it a heartbeat. Take your beef up with them. Doctors have done this for years.

I even remember them saying things like. "There's the little heart beating" .

You are correct, but in fairness, that has virtually nothing to do with you having been pregnant.

Sarah Palin has been pregnant a load of times, and I'm betting she's still a complete idiot when it comes to understanding reproductive science and fetal development.
