If you the read the rest of the article, what she is saying isn't dumb. You may not agree with it, but it goes into detail about what may or may not be a heartbeat. It's pretty clearly open to scientific interpretation.

To compare what Abrams said to stuff Herschel has said is, well, actually dumb.

Is a 'fetal heartbeat' really a heartbeat at 6 weeks?

But what exactly do we mean when we talk about a "fetal heartbeat" at six weeks of pregnancy? Although some people might picture a heart-shaped organ beating inside a fetus, this is not the case.

Rather, at six weeks of pregnancy, an ultrasound can detect "a little flutter in the area that will become the future heart of the baby," said Dr. Saima Aftab, medical director of the Fetal Care Center at Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami. This flutter happens because the group of cells that will become the future "pacemaker" of the heart gain the capacity to fire electrical signals, she said.

But the heart is far from fully formed at this stage, and the "beat" isn't audible; if doctors put a stethoscope up to a woman's belly this early on in her pregnancy, they would not hear a heartbeat, Aftab told Live Science. (What's more, it isn't until the eighth week of pregnancy that the baby is called a fetus; prior to that, it's still considered an embryo, according to the Cleveland Clinic.)

It's been only in the last few decades that doctors have even been able to detect this flutter at six weeks, thanks to the use of more-sophisticated ultrasound technologies, Aftab said. Previously, the technology wasn't advanced enough to detect the flutter that early on in pregnancy.

Which is why people wanting to shut down these conversations aren't helpful. If folks want to define life as when a heartbeat is present (which I don't think is an unreasonable definition of when life begins) we need to be willing to discuss scientifically what is a heartbeat.

A little more reading on your part may be in order:

Is a fetal heartbeat really a heartbeat ?

It depends on whether the woman wants it or not.

Odd angle of attack to go after her intelligence. From what I can tell, she's one of the smartest politicians who is nationally known. I have even wondered if she were not overweight and were perceived as better looking, if she wouldn't be on a very short list to be the next Democratic nominee. And I guess she still could be.

‘doctors’ used to be a shut-up term.

You're right, we don't want to see what the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has to say about it. National Review and Tucker Carlson are good enough.

I dont think discussing the science is what makes her sound dumb.

    This is what was dumb:
“It is a manufactured sound designed to convince people that men have the right to take control of a woman’s body.”

Especially since Planned Parenthood of all places disagrees with her.
(But later changed the wording for political reasons one assumes)

That's interesting. So is the "beat" sound manufactured or not I guess is the question to the first part of what she said. Does the machine actually generate the sound to reflect the firing of signals which are entirely inaudible? Would an 8 month old fetus' heart beat be detected by a stethoscope?

Depends on where you go, those sketchy "crisis pregnancy centers" that give you free ultrasounds absolutely do gimmicks like that and feed you all kind of misinformation

It's amazing the lengths these patriachal mouth breathers go to subjugate women into partial citizenhood.

Religious (masked with science) decision which historically had no merit in the discussion of men controlling or subjugating women.
