Why do see this as some kind of social correction rather than Disney simply expanding the scope of its IP to bring in more revenue from the same property? The 1989 cartoon version still exists for people to consume, you could stream it tonight if you wanted to. They are making a live action version that can appeal to a broad set of people too, its not even really a 'remake,' just getting more juice out of the same IP by doing a live action version.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Certs was heavily advertised on American television with a famous campaign featuring two attractive young people earnestly arguing over the proper classification of the mints. The one participant would assert, "It’s a breath mint!" The other would assay a rebuttal by stating, "It’s a candy mint!" This taxonomic dilemma would finally be resolved by the unseen announcer, who would achieve synthesis by explaining that Certs was "Two, two, two mints in one!"

I think your reply is fair. But your comment, "What IS racist is the double standard we're being conditioned to accept" indicated that you believe that any double standards (which are largely based upon history and context as opposed to the sort of prejudiced motives which came before) are automatically and inherently racist. Your reply is obviously much different in both tone and substance. Perhaps you were using some hyperbole to make your point, which may have been that you wanted people to at least acknowledge a double standard. That's why I was happy to concede that point. The question of whether and when we can or should stop thinking about these issues through a historical lens is a fair discussion in my opinion.

The obvious answer to "when does it stop" is when white people stop feeling threatened that a black person was cast as a mermaid and it doesnt become some kind of culture war fodder

What part of her resume below makes here unqualified for this role? Race is an issue when seeing a black girl as Ariel makes you think she only got it cuz she's black.

Halle Lynn Bailey (born March 27, 2000), also known by her mononym Halle, is an American singer and actress. She is best known for being one half of the musical duo Chloe x Halle with her sister Chlöe Bailey, together earning five Grammy Award nominations since 2018. Her role as Skyler Forster in the television sitcom Grown-ish has earned her a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series at the 2020 NAACP Image Awards. She will star in the 2023 film adaptation of The Color Purple, and in the same year will portray Ariel in the live-action Disney film The Little Mermaid.

Could you imagine the right wing meltdown if they cast a black dude in the next big budget Jesus movie?

What if it was just Willem Dafoe in the 1980s?

    Orlando.... Again
9 pages in and Disney still has y'all discussing something as trivial as skin pigmentation rather than the quality of the products.

Brilliant marketing on the stupid consumers.

Start a thread on Disney quality if you want. That isnt this one. I'll weigh in on their Marvel and Star Wars franchises as well as others. Looking forward to it.

“When does it stop? It stops when you stop whining about it.”

Yeah, somehow I feel like that’s not true.

    *We stop saying anything*

    *Still happens*

    *You promised it would stop*

*You said something, when you stop saying anything it’ll stop.*

What you’re really saying is “it’ll never stop, I just want you to shut up about it.”

Do you consider casting a black actress as Ariel some kind of "special social support and movements that are meant to specifically benefit historically marginalized communities at the expense of historically privileged communities?"

If this was somebody else's IP, not necessarily, but it's Disney's. They've been pretty outspoken about their intent, their mission, and their priorities. They've been clear about pushing minorities in films.

Considering that there is a limited amount of films and a limited amount of spots in every film, specifically trying to cast more minorities, even for roles involving White characters, to rectify historical injustices is a move at the expense of White people.

Wow, I can't see any way in the world that a black Ariel "is a move at the expense of white people."
How exactly are us whites being harmed by this?

Sounds like you are as invested in perpetuating racial grievance as the people you claim to disagree with. You ascribe to them motives which let you continue to get mad at the same stuff, as if every casting is some line in the sand you have to hold, lest they get one over on you. I think you have a lot in common with the people you supposedly disagree with, perhaps you are just the mirror image.

White actors are being harmed by this because minority actors are being specially prioritized to rectify past injustices. In other words, a bunch of White actors are going to be left without roles.

It's not the fact that Ariel was casted as a Black woman. It's the fact that Disney has overtly made clear that they want to prioritize casting minorities in their films. They want to push diversity, which in their case means, less White people more Black, Hispanic, gay people, etc.

You're joking, and that's a funny gif and South Park episode, but that's actually correct.
