Racist come in every shape and color. Many many years ago, at Tuskegee I heard American born blacks say absolutely horrible things about the darker skin tones blacks from Africa that came to America to study. Every race has racists that will denigrate any that are different.
Sadly… this Little Mermaid movie is just another chance for them to wave their hate.

To me the only thing more silly than people complaining about what race plays what character in a movie is the fact that we are having a discussion about it on a message board.

I'm OK with it as long as if they come out with a movie about the life of Queen Elizabeth she isn't played by a black girl.

I can’t imagine being this upset over what race the actor is that plays a fictional character of a mythical half woman half fish beast. Racists are sad people.

    Orlando.... Again
#1 it's not racist to hate the Disney remakes, they've been bad.

#2 if you want to support Disney great, but to buy into this if you don't buy a Disney product you're a racist crap is stupidity.

I don’t get in the Rings of power how the black queen has a completely white dad. Why not just cast both the same?

Never seen a single depiction of Jesus like that in the United States in all my life. Its always white Jesus. Why do you suppose that is?

Maybe you need more diverse friends? My Jamaican friends had a picture of Jesus that looked like Bob Marley. I have some Native American friends in Oklahoma and their Jesus is obviously Native American and I know several ME families with pictures of Jesus that looks like the one above.
Funny.. we are never given a description of Jesus in the Bible.. why do you think that is?

It’s more about $ than being woke. A big consideration is global markets. They are a large % of total revenue. And China is a massive market. Not only does Hollywood consider what the world/china will watch but also what can be distributed. I.e. China has a problem with zombie movies which resulted in delays for WW Z 2. China supposedly wouldn’t allow “Once Upon A time in Hollywood” to be shown with the segment of cliff booth throwing around Bruce Lee in a fight. Another example below. But point is, these changes to characters could be influenced by the global revenue. And china is now a massive market for movies.

“the studio has undone what was once a major and controversial change to Pete "Maverick" Mitchell's bomber jacket….Tony Scott's 1986 film, Top Gun, established that Maverick's jacked originally belong to his father. It possesses the Taiwanese and Japanese flags sat next to the United States flag, representing areas his father toured. The reversion to the unaltered jacket appears to have already angered Chinese netizens.

Audiences found the jacket now possesses the Taiwanese and Japanese flags, which were previously reported to have been removed, likely in an effort to appease China's state-censors.”

Yes, I’ll answer: Inheritance of medieval and renaissance depictions. The New Testament suggests that there was nothing exceptional about Jesus’ appearance. He looked like “everyone else.” Well, if you were an artist in medieval Europe that was what “everyone else” looked like. Unless you were a soldier, sailor, or tradesman, you might go your whole life never seeing anyone who was not “white” by modern parlance. The construct of “race” came long after those depictions; during this time, the distinction between people was their religion, not the shade of their skin. A white Saxon Christian identified with a dark skinned Christian from North Africa far more than they would a white Norse pagan. I don’t think it was anymore insidious than that.

I think in later generations people just got comfortable with what Jesus “looked like.” I note that all depictions of Jesus look like the local people who made them: the Egyptian Coptic Jesus looks quite a bit different than the Northern German Jesus. But people have always made God in their own image, so to speak.

But do most white people know in their heart of hearts that Jesus probably wasn’t a tall blonde-haired, blue-eyed, fair-skinned dude. Yes, I think so. Over my life I’ve also seen black people claim Jesus was black, citing obscure passages that support it. But I’ll bet you they also really understand deep down that, if anything, Jesus probably most closely resembled modern Iranians. Even that is just a guess, though. It’s damned hard to tell what the “race” of ancient peoples were since the people back then didn’t think in those terms and did not record detailed descriptions. If we could somehow get a look at people from 2,000 or more years ago, then they might resemble a race we would find unrecognizable today. I would love to find out, but I doubt that we will.

When I was young and hung out with my black friends at their house some of them had pictures of a black Jesus portrait. I noticed it but didn’t give it much thought.

When I saw the original Star Wars movies, I imagined that James Earl Jones really was Vader until Luke removed his mask. The power of the story was all that mattered. And that's how it should be now. Sadly, people who can't stop making political hay out of racial strife are indefatigable. People who just want to watch a good show are not.

The internet is full of little black girls getting excited about seeing a black aerial.

But where are the reaction videos of little white kids crying and being upset about it?

    “Mommy, she’s black ….whaaaaaaa”
“Don’t worry Britney, mommy’s going to leave a thumbs down”

I've seen lots of people complaining about people complaining about it, but haven't seen a single person complaining about it. It's really weird.
