Been following that issue for a bit but have not posted about it because I'm not sure I understand enough yet to know what I think of it. Not enough background about how long the staffing problem has persisted and whether options were available either now or earlier in the DeSantis Administration that would be smarter governance with honest attention.

If, as written about here, the problem has turned around with the increases in wages and the staffing issue is a short-term problem, this short-term solution using National Guard is probably as good as any.

But my first thought is that it again seems to be one of those difficult governance issues that are not part of the culture war that the administration would rather ignore, much like the property and casualty insurance market, so that they can effectively campaign for higher office on culture war issues.

I keep waiting for some journalist to do more of a deep dive but that doesn't happen as much with gutting of journalism and the intimidation factor

Finding: Florida can’t fully negate the effects of being tethered to the US and all that entails.

Good luck with that message. The simpletons in this state love Desantis despite being a horrible person and even worse governor. As long as he spews the words “woke” “CRT” “Biden bad” and “inflation” and continues his cowardly attacks on education and healthcare in this state, the rubes will fall in line. Desantis is nothing more than a Trump wannabe authoritarian who goes after the things like teachers and doctors that his base hates simply because he knows it will win him votes. He’s a total scum bag.

Ron DeSantis sends two planes of illegal immigrants to Martha's Vineyard | Fox News

EXCLUSIVE: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis followed through on his promise to drop off illegal immigrants in progressive states, sending two planes full of migrants to Martha’s Vineyard on Wednesday.

A video DeSantis’ office provided to Fox News Digital shows the migrants deboarding the planes at Martha’s Vineyard Airport in Massachusetts.

"Yes, Florida can confirm the two planes with illegal immigrants that arrived in Martha’s Vineyard today were part of the state’s relocation program to transport illegal immigrants to sanctuary destinations," the governor’s communications director, Taryn Fenske, told Fox News Digital.

"States like Massachusetts, New York, and California will better facilitate the care of these individuals who they have invited into our country’ by incentivizing illegal immigration through their designation as ‘sanctuary states’ and support for the Biden Administration’s open border policies," she said.

Using the power of the executive office to rile up the far right, nationalistic base by apoearing to target and punish someone with an oppossing opinion. Where have we seen that before? Legal or not...

    OT sort of
Dem mayor of Chicago sent immigrants to hotel approved for emergency shelter in a republican area close to Chicago. She's just as bad as others

I wonder if there is an agricultural worker shortage in Martha's Vineyard like there is in Florida?
Or if this is just more clowning for the cameras?
FE1041/FE1041: Labor Shortages in the Florida Strawberry Industry

Florida is the largest supplier of domestic winter strawberries in the United States. In 2016, Florida accounted for approximately 22% (450 million dollars) of the total US strawberry production value (2,065 million dollars) (USDA-NASS 2017). The total strawberry acreage in Florida reached 10,900 acres in 2016, and the Florida strawberry industry employed an estimated 15,000 workers annually (Guan et al. 2015). However, the industry has faced many challenges over the past few years. Labor shortage is one of the top three challenges.

Almost 80% of the respondents reported facing labor shortages during the entire strawberry season. The labor shortage was more serious during the peak harvesting period, especially for large farms

Labor shortages are a major threat to the Florida strawberry industry. The current labor crisis in Florida is a result of the shrinking pool of migrant workers and the unavailability of American workers. Labor shortage increases the labor cost of strawberry growers and makes it even more difficult to compete with the low-cost Mexican strawberry industry.

Two words, vertical farming. Associate can grow 60 acres worth of field grown crops (berries, cucumbers, tomatoes, leafy greens) year round in climate controlled greenhouse in 1 acre building, in any climate, on shorter cycle and beat price with current energy, decarb credits. We can eliminate cross country transport of lettuce from irrigated fields in Cali. Bigger head, no pesticide or fungicide and deliverable within 24 hours of harvest. Less than 5% of water demand as field grown crops, no runoff to pollute downstream runoff. This is the future of farming. Next prototype using solar, battery banks, thermal storage in a hot environment. will be in production in 18 - 24 months. much less labor, much more automation. delivery fleet electric powered. eliminate carbon from trucks to planes to trucks to store. direct ship from farm to store.

Was this linked? I wonder what is meant by a "republican area" and from where did the immigrants come?

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot sparks fury after moving 64 migrants bus from Texas to GOP suburb | Daily Mail Online

    • On Wednesday, 147 migrants arrived in the Windy City, city officials confirmed
    • Burr Ridge Mayor Gary Grasso said he wasn't aware that nearly half of them (64) would stay at the Hampton Inn nearby
    • The hotel was previously used to house refugees from Afghanistan, he revealed
    • The GOP official slammed Lightfoot for using the refugees as 'political pawns'
    • 'We're more than happy for people to find freedom, it is hypocrisy by the mayor of Chicago to complain about the governor of Texas,' Grasso added
    • The migrants, who mostly come from South America, will be housed for 30 days

Lori Lightfoot accused of 'hypocrisy' over border crossers (nypost.com)

Democratic Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is being accused of hypocrisy after it emerged that dozens of migrants who recently arrived in the Windy City by bus were secretly sent on to a wealthy Republican suburb.

Despite Lightfoot repeatedly claiming that Chicago was welcoming the influx of border-crossers from Texas, at least 64 were forwarded without warning to a Hampton Inn in Burr Ridge, village officials said.

“Neither staff nor I were contacted about the decision to house migrants in Burr Ridge,” the village’s Republican mayor, Gary Grasso, complained.

“It is hypocrisy by the mayor of Chicago to complain” about the new arrivals being sent from Texas just to bounce them back to Republican areas, Grasso told Fox News over the weekend.

    He's doing it to children:

At least some real Christians are helping them:

BTW, worth noting that these people are asylum seekers from Venezuela. DeFascist insisted on having a Victims of Communism Day, yet you see how he and his cronies treat the actual victims. See also his Lt. Gov's comments about asylum seekers from Cuba. This is the man you champion, @tilly?

Were they bussed to Chicago from Texas? It sounds like a "turnabout is fair play" incident in reaction to the TX governor, but I may be wrong. Still think that sending them to a certain neighborhood is not as big a deal as bussing or flying a bunch of people to a Dem led city.
