Huge media attention and we haven’t done it for 20+ years I believe. They just announced the 2024 tournament and we aren’t in again, although they did say an 8th team will be named later. This has just never made sense to me.
I think I remember after the debacle that was the Vegas trip in ‘06 that they wanted to do these tournaments closer to our recruiting base and reward east coast fans.
Portland this year is far enough and a great tournament of high quality teams, enjoy us being relevant again amongst the big boys. Hope Todd Golden has them ready, seems like a whole new team.
Our basketball fan base travels very poorly. And so these destination tourneys are not much of an allure, especially considering we are coming from Florida. I’d like to see us play these tourneys in regional areas with a solid Gator alumni population. Charleston is one example… and was relatively well attended.
Our occasional appearances in Orlando are well attended. It might be awesome if we moved the entire SEC/Big12 Challenge to Orlando. All ten games over two days at the Amway Center.
Yea I’m sure it’d be poorly attended considering how few we get for SEC tournaments in cities much closer. But that gym is so tiny I feel like we could get a couple hundred.
IIRC last time we played there our point guards were not playing according to instruction so Billy benched them and made Mike Miller play point in the second half. The Maui tournament is now a bit of an anachronism. Back in the old days those games didn't cout toward the limit on games played. The Great Alaska Shootout died after that rule change.
I don't remember all the details, but didn't BD bench the entire starting five and let the subs play the rest of the game? He took the loss intentionally. The team got the message, and came out all the better for it. Went all the way to the NCAAT championship game against Michigan State.
Heard the guys on Three Man Weave talking about how everyone that goes to Battle 4 Atlantis tends to feel like it is a waste of money and have little desire to return. Having not gone to one of these types of tournaments, especially one played in a smaller venue at a destination that is costly to get to, curious what the experience has been like.
I distinctly remember Skinny playing point in the second half so he didn't bench all of the starters. Yeah BD took the loss by using the bench as a learning tool. I had no problem with that.
