I think perhaps many older Floridians used to be registered Democrats but started voting more Republican at some point. Republicans have run the state for more than 25 years so I’m not sure I have considered it purple for some time. Of course, Obama won Florida twice. DeSantis only won the state by 0.4%. Scott beat Nelson by only 0.14% so there have been close elections state-wide at least.

Exactly, before DeSantis the Dems out numbered Pubs in Florida, yet the Dems still lost elections to the Pub candidates mainly because of the independents. I'll bet many of the independents in Florida were from out of state and they are leery of registering to be Pub, because in their once northern state where they're from there is a stigma attached to registering Pub.

I know a large group of people in Ocala who are lifetime Democrats and vote Democrat all the way down. They collectively got together and changed their political affiliation to Republican so they could have a say in local politics. I don’t know if there’s enough people statewide doing that to make a difference in the numbers or not.

Im registered as an Independent, formerly Republican, so I have no say in our primaries. I’m not going to join a political party just to have one. I don’t wholly align ideologically with either Democrats or Republicans.

yeah, I was thinking this too. A lot of people in closed primary systems will register for the party clearly in power so they at least have some say in who the likely winner is. The Florida Dem party is pathetically inept, and I imagine many of the local Dem organizations are too, so it wouldn’t surprise me if a decent chunk of these new GOP registrants are more liberal or moderate-leaning voters who have recognized the current lay of the land.

I thought we already had a thread on this, but I couldn't find it.

Signatures of Florida voters whose registration changed to Republican different than prior samples

Isis Rodriguez, 66, of Hialeah said in an interview she was shocked when a reporter told her she was a newly registered Republican as of Nov. 3. She said she was approached twice by women discussing voter registrations, but she said she gave them no personal information and no permission to update her records.

“Look, it says Republican,” she said in Spanish as she held her voter registration card.

Her neighbor, Milagros Llanes, 68, said she has been a Democrat since becoming a U.S. citizen. She also was surprised that her records were changed July 23 to show her as a Republican. She remembered people knocking on her door to discuss voting and indicating they knew her name and home address. She said others visited her as recently as earlier this month.

Caridad Fundora, 83, of Hialeah said two women asked for her voter registration card and said they would send a new one in the mail. The new card showed her as a Republican, even though she said she never asked to change parties.

People like the OP don't know freedom from tyranny. Our educational system clearly failed them.

Yes, but the Governor isn't punishing businesses they like. It's that Chinese freedom where they're in the crowd who is free to do what they like, while their political opponents are punished severely by the government if they try to exercise the same rights. That's freedom, right?
