How representative is the "Too Hot" community to American in general? Just today, I've seen overt posts of misogyny, white grievance and racism by different posters. That seems like a lot given the total number of perceived posters and seems out of proportion.

I never see such views in my social circle or my online community (FB, Twitter). Does Too Hot reflect America and the anonymity begets uncensored expression? Or do political forums attract the more extreme views? I hope it's the latter.

I hope not. Way to much nanoparticle fear, identity politics and I’m for the latest thing.

I think that it does reflect America. That’s why I avoided blocking posters for so long. However, I have now had it with these people. I also dropped out of the country club that I belonged to in Tampa. I am tired of listening to the racism, the anti-Semitism, the homophobia and the other crap that you have to put up with at many country clubs. Part of this has to do with the pandemic. It’s so disheartening to have to put up with the pandemic and especially the way that so many people in our country have done so little to combat it, that I just don’t want to deal with the other insane crap from so many people who could care less to be part of a kind and considerate society.

My theory is there are a bunch of 12 year olds pretending to be adults and posting nonsense just to get reactions. If you ignore 2 or 3 of the imps the discourse improves.

Nothing you encounter on the internet is real life. Get outside, touch grass, look at a cloud, and talk to real people. That's real life.

You guys might need to get out more. I find the right wingers on Too Hot very tame and level headed for a political board. The general population of them are quite extreme.

The anonymous nature of this message board allows people to say whatever they want whether or not they believe it or not. Some people will say things just to stir the pot and get a reaction. And many fall into that trap.

Doubtful. Most Americans aren’t so moronic as to be convinced viruses don’t exist.

The internet brings out the worst in people. It’s the worst thing to happen to mankind in my lifetime - we just haven’t seen the full fall out yet.

The internet does tend to bring out the worst in people, as well as the very worst of human instincts: herd instinct.

I find TH to be a realistic perspective. Self censorship is real — what is said here is the deep underlying thoughts — not said unless in confined trust. To me it helps see non verbal cues in real life.

I will say, I see many of the excuses and rants offered here today among my different social groups (okay, bar flies) College professors, law enforcement, construction, military, nurses. Those that are most consumed by media offer the most extreme takes. A Rush to judgement if you will.

Too Hot is kind of a moderate version of reality. I know people in real life who are way past the right and left extremes that we see on TH.

Except for the virus denial, that is something I've never seen out in the wild.

Out of curiosity I've checked out some other college football sites that have political message boards and I find Too hot to be the most left leaning I have been able to find. Has anybody else done the same and what did you think if so.

    A more serious answer,

but this place is much older, whiter, male, southern, wealthier, college educated, opinionated and politically invested than the general population.

so no, this place doesn’t represent much, other than a white male echo chamber basically.
