To me the 2023 class is way more important right now. These are the seniors who will on campus next summer if they stick. The 2024 class is a projection of kids who just completed their sophomore years in high school, probably played travel ball over the summer and are just starting their junior years. I just add this 2024 thread as an FYI.
This class seems to have more players from other schools that are not the big name baseball schools like the previous few years. Is that a good or bad thing? Tough to tell at this point.
Looks like Montsdeoca transferred from Hardee High to Fort Meade and is playing Qb for former Gator Jemalle Cornelius.
Fred Montsdeoca (SR) was a big Bull Gator in the Ag business from the Ocala area, had a son-in-law, Chris McCoun (LB-DE), that was a teammate back in the early to mid-70's. All real good people, Fred Sr passed away some time ago,...not sure who the younger Montsdeoca is but would bet it is a grandson.
Remember that Agriculture Fraternity - Alpha Gamma Rho? We had a guy in our freshman dorm - Murphree D - who called them - "Alpha Grabba Hoe."
My son is a 2025 and plays at Trinity Christian outside of jax. We’re starting his showcase camps. He’s 15, lefty and throws 85 average. Went to auburn this weekend for their showcase and he was the best pitcher there hands down. Trying to get him into a gators camp but they seem to be all full already. Want him to go to the good guys.
That nickname has been with them since at least the 1950's. Of course, I don't know when you were in Murphree dorm. I always liked the fraternity name, I Phelta Thi.
The January camps usually don't fill up until a few months from now. I wonder if the day or time slot you are looking for might be full instead of any others. I don't think they even start taking camper info until after fall ball. Checked the website and I see they have no info up yet for the winter camp. I'm ass-u-ming there will be a winter camp.
Lefty at 15 throwing 85 is very good. I would work on arm strength and what his proper arm motion is for his fast ball instead of pitches that might tweak his elbow at this age. Too many Tommy Johns now a days. Let him find his proper mechanics and worry about other pitches in a year or two. But no coach that wants to win now will tell you that. Kids arms need to be taken care of. Tagging @74nole on this.
100% accurate Lurk. Everything from stretching/warm ups/and proper mechanics need to be learned early with daily reenforcements. One of the best ways that I have ever used to determine proper arm slot/arm motion matching a player’s arm strength is get them stretched, good and loose and warmed up—put them in CF—hit pre-game type fly balls/grounders to them so that they can catch the balls coming in and have them make the throw to home plate to cut down “the runner trying to score from second”…. Watch his arm slot and finish throwing home from the CF drill. That normally is his “natural power slot”—then you key all of your work with him mechanically off of his power arm slot. IMHO you can teach any pitcher 15U to be competitive on the mound without the constant use of curveballs and sliders. Strong wrist action finish and follow through are key. If you really work your guys to pitch with confidence using 1) 4-seam FB, 2) 2-seam FB, 3) Change Up, and 4) Cut FB (or cutter) you will be competitive. Learning to locate, change the hitter’s eye level, and change speeds employing the change up you will give your team a good chance to win.
Wow 74. I learn so much reading your posts. One day, if I ever meet you, I'll bring a baseball so you can show me those 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 seam pitches.
