US Education in rough shape as scores plummet

So basically what you are are saying is that their public education systems are not based on "wokeness and political correctness."

 

Successful education starts at home and more and more kids aren’t getting the parental support necessary to thrive in school. Another factor is that as this country becomes more and more diverse, there are several ethnicities that do not value education as much as others and kids from those backgrounds are often going to struggle.

I don’t care how good the teacher or school. If education is not stressed at home, more often than not, a kid has no chance.

 

Said from one with the means to make sure their kids catch up. The lost opportunity and damage done to kids without those means is palpable.

 

There are no guarantees. Lots of rich kids with every advantage and every opportunity still manage to screw it up. Yet in a lot of cases these kids get like 1000 chances, though i think with todays culture (think “affluenza” type cases or someone like Matt Gaetz who is a damn congressmen) the number of “extra chances” given can get pretty absurd.

There is a simple reality here:

If a kid has a shitty home life, but has a great school and teachers who care, then they have a chance. An opportunity. Not all will grab it. But at least the opportunity is there.

If a kid has a shitty home life AND a shitty school environment, then they really don’t even have that opportunity. Some can still find a way but it becomes the exception much more than the rule. Where you neglect the schools you are basically locking in poverty and crime.

No. I didn't say that at all. No more than I said that their education isn't hampered by corrupt politicians defunding and attacking educators either or reframing history to appease the sensitivities of a few. All I wrote was that finland and s. Korea value their education. Period.

Thanks, they are in person schooling for the school year and corresponding state whether led by a dem or rep governor. Sucks that the Libs kept schools closed, but own it. You and the other lefties wanted it.

Respectful question here, as I truly do not know and would like to; I’m quite positive that the deficits could be made up in the kids who were K-2 during this nonsense, but what is in place to systemically do it, and what is the fallback if or when it’s not working.

It seems to me that many who whole heartedly supported remote learning are only now realizing that it didn’t work. I’m truly trying to be convinced that those who created the problem can be trusted with a solution.

Additionally, what is being implemented at the college level to address the deficits in the high school kids that were shortchanged by this mess?

 

DeSantis unconstitutional laws in Fl. and again any link to a credible source. Now also link ... in which educational category does Fl rank 3rd.

 

That's a complicated question and one which is probably beyond my pay grade. Couple thoughts though: 1) Parents need to help. When children are behind in school, the parents are often their best resource. 2) Remediation in the school. Many schools, even those with an abundance of low SES students, have personnel resources that can provide one-on-one and small group tutoring. That's tricky though, because too often admins will pull children out of important classes like music to get additional tutoring in reading and math. Before folks start arguing for that measure, they should know that it's flawed practice and should be forbidden per federal legislation (ESSA).

This opens up a risk/reward argument and I'm certain we won't agree.

I know some programs are increasing remedial class offerings for students coming in with deficits. These are often in math and sciences, but we are considering a music theory introductory class in my department. Frankly, we should have offered that class long ago.
