Florida has a large population, but outside of UF there aren’t really any premier options. UF almost has to be highly selective by default - just based on population and nothing else. Texas is somewhat similar arrangement for a large state with UT-Austin, but in totality their second tier is probably a bit better than the state of FL. Both states chronically underfund their secondary school systems to their own detriment. California is on a different level with several elite schools in state (multiple elite publics AND private with Stanford).
This is your informational contribution on the relative strength/weakness of public schooling? Ooops #1. Your first sentence doesn't even make sense. Ooops #2
The drama crew at the NYT was screeching a decade or two before we’re back to normal. Really? The educators and kids are that inept?
Yeah, my son was kind of sweating it but out of his senior class of 100, 6 got into UF. His biggest gripe was lack of AP classes that are available in public schools, says a lot of his dorm mates had a big headstart.
At first glance, this appears to be an ignorant partisan take, but you might be on to something wrt Pearson. Can you point to any veritable connections between Pearson and teacher unions? I'm not doubting it; am genuinely curious.
LOL, like I said you guys keep thinking those young kids are just great and public schools are awesome, fine by me.
And you keep stuffing your feet in your mouth. (Hint: Neither I or any of my "guys" have suggested that).
Sorry if I wasn’t clear. My point wasn’t that they are connected. My point was that they, just like the unions and politicians, just use the children to serve their own self interest.
Yeah not gonna happen now that the public school teachers are woke. Your public education at work libs....embrace it because you own it.
I'm with you on the problematic issues of Pearson and politics influencing education. The shot across the bow wrt unions, though, appears to be empty rhetoric.
Not at all. We have all discussed ad nauseum here wrt police unions that they protect bad apples. Those bad apples often continue to rot until they take things to far and unjustly take or ruin someone’s life. Teachers unions are no different. They promote a “one size fits all mentality that discourages outstanding achievement and promotes mediocrity. Why would an outstanding teacher continue to go above and beyond when the slacker next door doesn’t do Dick. Now this is not to say that many teachers do not rise above the slackers and and go above and beyond. Those should be commended. They should also be compensated for it.
Very true. I was in IB and UF was pretty easy overall. And I was nowhere near the top of my class in high school. I have a nephew at UGA (I know) who went through the IB program and says it's still the same.
There was a special years ago from Fareed Zakaria, "Fixing Education" comparing education in the developed world and how Finland and S. Korea have the best educational systems. From what I recall, both cultures value education and this shows in funding, standards for educators, and the amount of time students spend in school (I can't confirm but I think they said that they do not have summer vacation, or at least it isn't very long) Teachers are highly paid, require a masters or doctorate, and their licensing exam is very difficult.
What you libs need to ask yourselves is WHY the public education system is chit. I know the answer but I would like to hear your thoughts as to why.
