You posted "the pandemic didn't cause this" and then blamed politicians and the response, how was it unfair to imply what I said?
We have left our oldest in public. But she is well beyond her years in maturity and has shown the ability to handle this. She will excel regardless and the last thing we want is for her to lose her enjoyment of learning and being with her friends (proud papa moment was her getting a perfect score on her Geometry EOC as she headed to high school/killed the writing as well which she did not get from me). The younger two are thriving in private. Funny side note...the private school our kids are at has a strong liberal contingent. I was about to switch them to a different private school because of how stupid some of the board was with handling Covid. But sometimes you have to sacrifice the dumb decisions by people when you are able to know your kids get it.
I'll try and catch up with this thread later. In the meantime, the first step in improving American education should be to quit placing so much stock (and esp. resources like time and $) into standardized testing.

Hard to see how this improves, given the current assault on teachers. It's one of the last jobs I would want right now, especially in Florida. Can't imagine how first responders and ex military teaching kids will help the numbers. As an aside my son went thru a great public school system and transferred to a private HS for sports. The public schools were far superior academically. There is a lot of misinformation, i.e., BS, out there. First of all not everyone has the option of private schools/home schooling. Sure, there are some great private schools, but certainly not all and there are plenty of excellent public schools, something we checked out before moving.
My point being that there are excellent public schools in Florida. Everyone moans about how hard it is to get into UF without acknowledging that the VAST majority of students are the product of public schools.

I was being facetious. Don’t all schools over 2 years old look like prisons with parking lots. We try to teach kids to have pride in themselves and then send them into these prisons every day. They don’t have to be fancy or elaborate. Just clean and well kept inside and out.
It still comes down to parenting. School is not child care. Spend some time with your kids while they do homework.

Between the Teacher’s Unions and the politicians the children don’t have a chance. Companies like Pearson are making a very strong run to make a triangle with the unions and politicians.
I haven't always agreed with your opinions on education, but you appear to be well-informed. May I ask were you an educator or otherwise involved with the profession? This was a great post, esp. in your suggestion that teaching is an art. You couldn't be more right.
And you were wrong. The deficits from remote learning can be made up. Further, you fail to recognize that children will have "toughened up" in unique ways as result of that experience. They will also have a greater appreciation for their in-person learning opportunities.
