The drinking water system in Jackson — Mississippi’s largest city and home to more than 160,000 residents — is failing, state officials announced on Monday. Thousands of Jackson residents already have no or little water pressure, and officials cannot say when adequate, reliable service will be restored.

The city water system has been plagued with problems for years, including tens of thousands of residents losing water between one and three weeks during a 2021 winter storm. At a press conference Monday night, Gov. Tate Reeves said the city’s largest water treatment plants may be completely down.

“The O.B. Curtis plant is not operating anywhere near full capacity,” Reeves said. “We may find out tomorrow it’s not operating at all. We’ll have better visibility on that when we get in there tomorrow.”

Reeves announced he would sign an emergency declaration for the capital city’s water system and create an “incident command center” to distribute water to the city’s residents beginning Tuesday morning. “Until it is fixed, it means we do not have reliable running water at scale,” Reeves said. “It means the city cannot produce enough water to fight fires, to reliably flush toilets, and to meet other critical needs.”

Jackson water system is failing, city will be with no or little drinking water indefinitely

Sounds like now would be a good time for MAGA Gov. Tate Reeves to explain what his state did with the $75 million they received for water infrastructure funding

That and why there is a large tanker truck filled with water outside the governor’s mansion.

But he did get rid of CRT so he’s got that going for him.

Did I mention that the majority of people in Jackson are black?

A fact that gives the state more of a reason to not care if they’re in need of water.

Hopefully citizens decide to help themselves to as much water from this thing as possible.

Jackson Mississippi has had issues with the O. B. Curtis water treatment plant going back as far as April of 2021 and earlier. A quick search and news articles reveal the problems have been caused by insufficient staffing, maintenance, flooding and fire over the years. The more I read about this plant the more I am inclined to believe due diligence in planning, construction and industry practices were not a priority.

This is a long read but well worth the time to get an indication of what has been going on. As pointed out by @swampbabe I violated the rule of 4 paragraphs so I have edited the post to comply with the rules of paragraphs per article. To get the full scope of the issue please read the article.
‘No Efforts To Recruit’: EPA Says Jackson Failed To Address Water System Needs
But just last Friday, she offered a grim assessment of the City’s attempts to address its single greatest need: qualified water operators. Not only is Jackson nowhere near acquiring the necessary staff to operate O.B. Curtis at full capacity, the EPA says it has yet to see the City even try.

“We asked in an information request letter for their communications regarding staffing. In (both) documentation and communications, we did not see evidence of any efforts to recruit. So I don’t know that they’ve tried to reach into that labor pool, or if so, what specific actions they have taken,” Kemker said.
    .........
“If they want to hire city employees, that’s fine. If they want to contract for operators or maintenance technicians, that’s acceptable as well. And they do it on the wastewater side,” Smith said.
    .......
On Tuesday morning, Reeves announced that he was activating the National Guard to assist the operations at O.B. Curtis. “The state is marshaling tremendous resources to protect the people of our capital city,” he said. “It will take time for that to come to fruition. But we are here in times of crisis for anyone in the state who needs it.”
Fact is the O. B. Curtis water plant is the responsibility of the city. Of course that doesn't mean the city isn't subject to state and federal regulations concerning the welfare, operations and maintenance of the plant. In short this is a city failure that now requires state and federal intervention.

The following you tube video begs the question what happened with the city following up on the request and what happened with the request. EPA administrator Michael Regan stated Jackson could receive infrastructure dollars within months. And....

For historical purposes here is an article from Feb 21 that caused issues with filter screens icing over and pumps at the O.B. Curtis water treatment plant.
WLBT granted exclusive tour of O.B. Curtis Water Treatment Plant
The storm caused surface water temperatures at the reservoir to fall to 48 degrees. That surface temperature, coupled with the sub-freezing outside temperatures, led to the water screens freezing up, Williams said.

“Those froze and we couldn’t bring water in,” he said. “When the water gets to 48 degrees and the temperature outside is below 32 it’s a bad combination.”

He's got 90 degree weather and a tanker of cold water to pour into his swimming pool. No need to flee to Cancun!

This was a failure of government at all levels, kinda like Katrina. OT, but I though we were limited to four paragraphs?

Why the c'mon man, O and B? What do you disagree with or are you being your typical contrarian self?

Edit, I just saw your reply. Other people get called out for breaking that rule and in addition those long winded replies are annoying. YMMV, of course.

Yeah. That’s a bad look. I think Reeves booking a trip to Cancun would be optically better! The truck inherently implies they expect the problem to last awhile, otherwise the gov should be under the same conditions as everyone else.

That being said, no doubt the city is largely responsible BUT major infrastructure failures are state/federal as well - you can’t just wash your hands of it and blame the city (like the failed response to the Flint water issue).

You made a good point and then called him on excessive content. Seemed like you were acting the Karen.

The ultimate failure is with the city which has caused state and federal intervention. If I understand correctly EPA has been working with the city for well over a year. Failures on the city level have now caused state intervention (disaster relief application), FEMA intervention (federal) and management changes on the local level. This is nothing more than a band-aid to an ongoing problem as I'm sure once the water issue is stabilized the state and federal interventions will cease and the city will once again regain control.

As an aside I edited the article I referenced to comply with 4 paragraphs of 43 paragraph article that covers the history city, state and federal actions.
