Terrible story. Many Twitter comments last night were denying this ever happened until BYU issued a statement of apology and accusing the girls godmother of fabricating a story for sympathy, because she’s running in an election.

Frankly the Duke coach should have pulled the team from the floor after the first time it happened.

I simply don’t understand the hatred in our country. A fan yelling the N word in a crowded gym in 2022 is simply unthinkable to me. Yet here we are. Some people simply just suck as human beings and don’t deserve the freedom we afford them.

That was my question. I've heard claims of racial epithets coming from the stands before, including toward Chris Leak in the Swamp, but I didn't believe them simply because I didn't think other fans would tolerate it.
But I guess this did happen? Geez

Can't get my head around observing that kind of behavior as a fan and not getting involved. People in general are pretty scared of confrontation but I have never been one to shy away as long as I felt it was the right thing to do. Not patting myself on the back or anything but silence in that situation equals tacit approval. It's embarrassing and I couldn't sleep at night knowing I watched it go down even if it meant putting myself in harms way. Being armed with the knowledge that I'm on the right side is empowering and I believe justice will be served even if I suffered immediate consequences.

    Just how I was raised

About 30% of the country found a permission structure to talk and act like this in 2016.

I have a news flash: we, like every other country, have a lot of assholes. There was only one way to deal with that particular one: the nearby fans and the coaches aware of it should have immediately confronted him and removed him. To have allowed it the to entire match was outrageous. Moreover, his name should be revealed. He isn't entitled to anonymity, but deserves to be marked with a scarlet "A".

Given the BYU coaches’ non-response during the incident, maybe a few years of a “nobody play BYU” boycott is in order

EDIT: Unclear from some of the coverage what/whether any steps were taken to address this during the match. If there were, a boycott might be a bit harsh. Either way, BYU is going to live with this

I don't get how racists reconcile rooting for a team that is mostly black men in the first place.

Racists are mentally delayed creatures, nothing they do makes sense.

Anyway, I’m sure the usuals will come in here saying how everyone is overreacting and deflecting to who can say the word

So we had the normal race baiters out there calling for blood, wonder if they will issue an apology LOL. Who are kidding, of course they won't.

I read an article that said BYU and the police department are reviewing every video that they've been able to get their hands on. And they said at this time, they have not found any evidence of racial slurs. I find that pretty odd. If it happened that's horrible and I hope the individual is punished. But I think I'll wait too to see how it plays out. In today's age of technology, I'm shocked that no one took out a phone and has a video of this.

I'm not sure I would take this source at face value for a single sourced anonymous source. Here is their description:

It should also be noted that the person who was banned was a student at Utah Valley University, which seems to differ from the description in that article of them as "mentally challenged."

A UF player came out last week and said she's had the n word thrown at her during matches too.

So we have police saying they didn't hear anything, are they on the take also?

That is not what they said. The police say that they did not see that the person banned for telling the Duke player that she should watch her back was the one yelling the slurs.

    From a more balanced source:

The fan who was banned by BYU does not appear to have yelled slurs at volleyball match, campus police say

So we have the person DUKE pointed out as the culprit being shown to not to have done anything wrong. So now we are supposed to go with "could've" been someone else. Or maybe nothing happened and the Duke player "thought" they heard a slur. Not the first time this would've happened.

“The person who was banned was the person identified by Duke as using racial slurs. However, we have been unable to find any evidence of that person using slurs in the match.”
