You act as if this is some nefarious secret result of loopholes. The difference is state income tax. States that don’t have income tax are going to be more regressive. That is more than offset by the progressiveness of he federal income tax. The percents in the middle and lower are not that widely different and most of those states are lower cost of living states.
It’s only nefarious in how the conservatives spin it. That’s a crap load of “skin in the game” and many of them are lumped into the free loading 47% that don’t pay income taxes. That’s what’s nefarious about it.
If they are in the 47% that don’t pay income taxes they don’t have much income and thus they are paying more sales and property tax to income, which is how it should be. Take Florida. If you had income tax then you have workers paying for retirees from other states as well as supporting infrastructure for tourists. Not all people with lower realized income are lower wealth.
