This is one of those jokes that I'm never going to get tired of. I hope we're making Egbunu/end of January jokes in 2092 when the entire state of Florida is underwater and we've moved UF to Grand Junction, Colorado.

I don’t think anyone faults him. UF apparently wouldn’t clear him, he looked around and a few schools apparently would. So he’s going to one of them. Lots of history with guys school/doctor shopping and it ending badly (Chase Johnson the most recent from UF if reports are true), so I just really hope that doesn’t happen here. All I know is that I would trust the doctors at UF and the ones we reached out to (Harvard Emory etc) 100 times out of 100 before a place like K/State.
I bet the Florida at K State game will be on ESPNU so I won't be able to watch it at home. I can get all the ESPN+ games except for those on ESPNU.
From what I understand, Nebraska wouldn't clear him. I guess some schools are willing to take a higher risk than UF. Wish him the best.
Interesting. I wonder even if he balls out at K-State, will NBA teams clear him? I think he’s probably auditioning an overseas career at this point... which isn’t a bad thing. They are at less risk, because they usually aren’t as litigious as the USA. If you sign a waiver in other countries, they are typically iron clad. At least from my knowledge of European culture. He should easily make more than the $5M insurance money and maybe transfer to the NBA later after teams see that proof that he’s able to play without collapse.
I don’t know enough to question anything you wrote. I just find it amazing that a guy who hasn’t suited up in 2 years is confident enough in his ability to forego $5M. He could work as a gas station attendant and be set for life with numbers like that. After taxes, assume $3M. 3% is $90K/year “salary” on the interest and he never touches his $3M. Any additional income and it starts getting decently comfortable without much effort. Hope he makes good on his confidence and earns a killing.
The flip side is some guys are making $40 million a year in the NBA, and some players who are average NBA players are making $10 million or more per year.
I am a tax lawyer, and I don’t know either. The tax CPA’s at the big firms might know. I am pretty sure that if KJ bought the insurance policy with his own money or with money he borrowed, then he wouldn’t have to pay tax on the $5 million. If UF bought the policy for him, then the answer might be different, but you get into issues like was KJ considered an employee of UF for purposes of the tax law. I don’t know the answer.
I am not a tax lawyer but I know some really good ones. Going to a hockey game with my family and one later this year. I might ask. Often insurance payouts are tax free because they are compensation for a loss so really nothing is gained. My wife had one from an auto accident. She was on a bicycle and the other person was in a car. I like to apply the rules of the playground about what is fair. When my wife took torts as a first semester law student she would ask me about cases and I always applied that principle. BTW she booked torts at UF but not just on my tutoring. LOL. But she did appreciate that point of view when looking at a case. If the $5 miilion payout is due to lost wages then maybe it is taxable as it would have been income. If the $5 million is from taking away a life long dream that is something else. Like I said I am not a tax attorney and it has been years since I have been at a Holiday Inn Express.
