Speaking for myself only, this 78 year old leftist grew up knowing what a woman was and why I was attracted to them. I’ve tried to be open minded, however, though not always successfully, and have been helped by my children. Thus, I’ve come to believe sexual identity is not as black and white as I grew up believing. It costs me nothing to accept people as they are when it comes to how they are most comfortable with their sexual identity, nor am I threatened by their choice. It seems to me that no one is forcing anyone else to change their sexual identity, but simply want others to respect and accept their choice. That’s apparently too much to ask of some.
I think you’re missing my point. Everything you listed are issues which we get to vote or have a voice on. It’s part of the give and take in a vibrant democracy. I’m talking about the undeniable focus of many republicans to deny that.
I'm just talking about the poll. I would have picked democracy as my choice for the reasons given. I am exhibit A of why that poll tells us nothing. We all find the other side a threat to OUR view of democracy. (Which is part of the problem.)
I respect what you are saying in your growth in open mindedness, and I accept anybody for who they determine they want to be, but there is some definitions that are just factual and do not need to change to some social distinctions. A man is a man and a woman is a woman. If the individual has a sexual identity conflict and desires to be be the other sex it doesn't change the fact that they were born either a man or a woman. We can as society accept this, and respect the individual, but it doesn't change the definition. But to be a little snarky, changing definitions is what the left does. ie. recession
Groomers... trannies... armed IRS agents... vaccines passports...vaccine mandates forever... inflation to the moon... gas too expensive to buy.... food scarce and too expensive... all other inflation out of control... China building more/faster missiles... the 'CRIB' nations making their own world currency to replace the dollar... FBI stalking parents at school board meetings... Covid-19 and the people that weaponized it (though gain-of-function) to attack humans. Biden's America SUCKS!
Again here we see the conflation of controversial issues with the threat to democracy. Controversial issues can have decisions reversed with a change due to an election or by the courts. A threat to democracy is creating conditions nationwide where minority rules cannot be changed because the minority has maneuvered themselves into unchangeable power and the courts allow it.
Perhaps it is (or will be). An issue need not be the most highly concerning to be the turning point, only needs to be the straw that broke the camel's back.
I don’t mind you being snarky. I’ve mastered the art. But has the left so much changed the definition as simply coined terms to reflect sexual identity? I have an adult niece who was born most definitely a woman, but she claims to have always “felt” like a man. She now identifies as one and dresses and acts like one. She won’t take the radical step of having operations, though. Just between me and you, I find the whole thing silly, but I’m not in their shoes, thankfully.
As for the poll, after watching the video of Luis Miguel (FL state rep candidate), I'd argue that the biggest issue in America is willful stupidity.
A couple things strike me on this. I agree with @tilly that "Concern for democracy" could be getting votes from both sides. So not clearly a democratic win. Also, the next two issues are related and as a whole are a much bigger number than #1, and would tend to favor republicans at the moment. Surprised to see abortion so low on the list.
Although they certainly weren't happy about the results if I recall the Democrats accepted George W. Bush's victory in 2004. As far as 2016 is concerned although she complained about the results as well as the campaign Hillary Clinton conceded within 24 hours of the polls closing. It's been almost two years since the 2020 presidential election and although he lost the popular vote by an almost 8 million vote margin and the Electoral College vote by over 70 votes Trump has yet concede and almost certainly never will. I have to see a speech of this nature from Donald Trump.
False equivalence. And to be clear, I didn't lodge my criticism solely at Republicans, even if they are the worst offenders right now. Too many Democrats offer crackpot theories when they don't like losses.
Trump got 4 years of "Russia Russia Russia" and Hillary and the DNC paid for a phony dossier to delegitimize Trump
