Those Talmans look really cool. I wish I got along with Ibanez necks better. They have so many cool designs and seem like a great bargain.

I have changed out pickups in the past, but not on any of the three I mentioned above. The Charvel came with one of my favorite combinations (Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge position and 59 in the neck position) and I really like the Tex Mex pickups in the Jimmy Vaughn strat. The Asian strat’s pickups are pretty meh, so I may change them out at some point but they’re not so bad that I’ve felt compelled to.

All of them have the original hardware, and I’m generally not too picky in that regard as long as the instrument is reliable and it stays in tune. I think if I gigged with them more often I’d probably be finickier about that stuff, but the vast majority of my gigs the past several years have been with hollow body electrics and full acoustics.

These days with all the boutique aftermarket stuff out there it’s almost overwhelming IMO. Like @ridgetop said, you can quickly outspend the value of the guitar. I liked Fralin and Lollar strat pickups many years ago, but there are so many more options now.

 

I’m pretty frugal outside of entertainment.

Being able to enjoy yourself and connect in this blip of life is paramount to me.

That being said, I would like to drive a higher end car at some point for the quality. I have to this day chose utility (right now driving a Camry paid with cash) over luxury. Not if it means a car payment though, which probably means used.

Maybe an older Porshe, like in Californication.

 

Thanks for the input. The lipstick tubes on the talman are just so thin and low output. It was a first guitar so I will never get rid of it. Ibanez necks are more playable for me but they are different. Main guitar is a late 90s American sunburst strat so nothing special. I do agree that staying in tune and intonation are what matters most with solid bodies. Was just looking to buy a couple more to have some more options or to keep in different tunings. I'm curious about lower end GandL guitars but haven't picked one up yet.

Semi hollow and hollow are whole other stories.

 

I have to agree the lower end G&L guitars give me a bit of GAS when they come across my social media feeds on sale from Musician’s Friend, etc. They look really nice for the price point and while I have enough strats for now I’ve always wanted a tele type.

The last car I bought was about 5 years ago. A 2005 Volvo Turbo S40 for $2400.

Not a looker (but not bad either), but love the way it drives. I've put about 50,000 miles on it now, and when/if it has a major problem that I can't fix myself I will sell it for junk for $500.

So $1900 for 50,000 miles comes out to $0.04 cents per mile... so far.

 

And young folks all think they "need" those $7 Starbucks. Crazy...

 

Compare that to a coworker of mine who paid 10k down for a truck and still has a$500 a month payment. Just crazy to me. I don't fault people who have worked their lives and can afford a nice car even if it isn't the most sensible but to me that comes after securing a home and contingencies for retirement and emergencies. I've always been an old soul when it comes to that though. Even at UF my roommates were always amazed that I never worried about money.

 

When people give me grief about my old cars I like to tell them "I don't like putting money into things that depreciate."

It helps that I'm pretty good with a wrench. Not sure everyone could make the old car routine work for them.

 

it also kind of depends on how long you plan to keep it as well though. If he turns it in in 4 years and goes new again, it’s very different than if he keeps it 20 years. I bought a relatively nice new car in 2011 (Acura TSX) that I knew would last with the intent of a long hold. I’m on year 11 and not getting rid of it any time soon. And being the only owner I know its whole history.

 

Sure. There are always exceptions. I'm not locked into any one method but again, I work with guys in their 20s that rent apartments and don't have high paying jobs that are buying new vehicles. Not the same as some one financially stable that can't change their own oil where a new car might make sense. My wife has a 2016 acura ilx and it had been good to her but it's now out of warranty and things are starting to need some maintenance. She said she will not buy brand new again.
