I think its more than just the election though. Many felt this way before Trump. There has been a migration (slope) to a more progressive ideology. Often for ed by lazy rhetoric about bigotry and intolerance, with no room for nuance and discussion. This has in turn led to an overreacting response from the right in many ways. Things like rights of private businesses, Churches to speak their truth, whats taught in schools, taxation, abortion/choice, health care, racial tensions etc. These were all big issues viewed by both sides as threats to our way of life long before 1/6. I think that number likely incorporates a large number who still hold those core concerns on both sides. Perhaps a separate 1/6 type question should have existed in this poll?
Looking at the PDF and reviewing the questions the question being highlighted is an open question regardless of political affiliation. That said we get a plurality on from all sides of the issue. In this sense the question is worthless as it doesn't portray which political group feels our democracy is being threatened much less why. I don't think they see the disconnect. No way you can be in favor of all that crap and not be a threat to democracy.
1 million died from Covid in the US. The hospital system was at and beyond max capacity. The lockdowns likely saved the hospital/health care system from collapse and perhaps saved millions of lives. Covid was a national disaster requiring drastic measures. let truth be your guide.
the majority of citizens who aren’t the looney left/radical right/nutty conspiracy theorists, will need to become more active in politics. We see the harassment of election officials by trump followers. We’ll need to stand up to those threats if we want to maintain our democracy. Once it’s broken - that’s it.
Doggone it, Tilly, Good point, but for the life of me I can’t see where democrats are doing anything nearly as threatening as what republicans are up to. I must have a blind spot, so maybe a republican can point me to anything democrats are doing which threatens democracy.
I agree. Very curious to hear it. I was actually thinking of starting a thread on this today. Dems are vilified as "The radical Left" but for what reasons? Gun control and abortion stances are not a threat to our democratic institutions.

Tilly, the things you list are issues. The voters determine how they are resolved. Many republicans are trying to undermine the will of the people. That to me is a huge difference.
Of concern to the GOP this fall should be the 21% of Republicans that think the investigations into Trump should continue. What should be a red wave in the fall may end up being a ripple and they may not even win the Senate. However, still a lot of time between now and November.

Disagree, they see the disconnect they just don't care. Some people put blinders on and believe anything they are told. This poster willfully thinks any covid numbers/studies are correct. Cant fix people like that.
the problem is that if we lose the basic core of our democracy, then none of the other issues matter much. And if that sounds like hyperbole, consider Arizona tried to pass a law that allows their legislature to discard the vote and send electors for whomever they want to. The party head shelved those bills by sending them to every committee he could, and for his efforts to protect the vote, he got primaried out. And look at who the republicans have nominated to be in charge of elections there. Georgia legislature now has the right to fire any county voting commissioner they choose and is install their own. Pennsylvania republicans have nominated a full blown voting denier who would also be willing to throw out the vote if he believed it was fraudulent. The last election we were one or two judges and one or two state house leaders away from absolute chaos. And in the interim heaven knows how many local crack pots have been elected, ones that will try to do what the Republican in Wayne county MI tried to do in 2020. and all of this is before what massive further degradation would come with a second Trump term. serious degradation of our democracy is a lot closer than those republicans passively letting it happen are willing to admit. so yeah, I’m with Phil - but where I am it won’t matter much, it’s turned pretty blue over the last few cycles as the crazy has risen. The hope in this cycle is that all of the Trump groin lickers lose, and it sends a message to the republicans that the idiocy surrounding that man has finally jumped the shark. But for that to happen, it takes one issue voters.
How exactly are those a threat to democracy? Policies are instituted all the time without being done by public referendum. Now, I don't doubt some people would view those as threats and that could be reflected in the poll

I'm making no claim of which issue is valid. Im just saying that the idea that the "democracy" point in that poll is broader than just 1/6. It is actually a pretty nuanced point and doesnt say what some think ít does.
Ok. Just my perspective and you are a fair minded guy so I think you will take this how I mean it and not as a political fireback. Abortion. I view the easy disposal of millions of potential Americans as a threat to democracy as a whole. Covid. While I am a supporter of the vaccine and wore my mask everywhere it was dictated and more, the ease at which business were simply cast aside is a scary thought. It poured a bit of grease on the slope. If the baker had lost the case based on CONTENT, I would see that as an afront to artistic expression and speech. Defunding the police gave the impression of a move toward less protection. There have been efforts to censor pastors for speaking about traditional marriage. We can disagree on all of these things politically and still see how we may see them as harmful to democracy.
