‘He is my hero’: Florida student died protecting heartbroken girlfriend in robbery near Cheaha State Park

UCF student died while protecting his girlfriend during a hike through an AL state park. They were checking out the sights and waterfalls when an old lady asked for help.

It was mid-morning when they were flagged down by two women who said they were having car trouble, and the couple stopped to help. That is the way they were raised, and what they had been taught to do.

“I called my dad (to ask for car repair advice), watched some YouTube videos and tried to fix car,’’ Paulus said. “When we realized it couldn’t be fixed, I asked if she needed anything else.”

“She (Hider) pulled a gun, said put your hands up, walk into the woods and drop your phone and keys,’’ Paulus recounted.
A five year old was found in the woods holding a loaded shot gun! The child was apparently with the other old lady robber. WTF.

Seems straight out of a horror movie.

I gotta stop you right there. It really depends on the circumstances. In the woods, I’m not helping anyone out.
In Publix or in the parking lot during the day, I’m helping out.

I mean, you gotta use judgement of the situation obviously, but I'd be more inclined to help someone in the woods if they seemed like they needed it. They're at more risk away from help.

I've helped all kinds of strangers over the years. Hitchhickers, given rides to people who ran out of gas, whatever. Not tooting my horn, just how I want to live my life.

I spent one night in jail in my life, it was for stopping a guy who was beating up his girlfriend. I threw a wrestling hold on him and told my wife to go get the cops. They came and arrested both of us. The next morning I got an apology from the judge and the arresting officer got a chewing out from him.

Would I do it again? You are damn right I would except this time I wouldn't send for the cops.

I think that’s pretty cool and it says a lot about the kind of guy you are.
I used to pick folks up when I was younger. But ever since I had children, I’m much less inclined to interact with strangers. I do help neighbors whenever I can. And it should be noted that I keep trying to help libbies out with their intolerance and hate issues on this forum. So there is always that.

Here's more on the tragic incident. My question is why does a 5 yr old boy have a shot gun? Criminals raising criminals?
Yasmine Hider: Details of how robbery & shooting victim, Adam Simjee, was gunned down while protecting girlfriend

A black female, later identified as Yasmine Hider, was laying on the ground nearby. Hider had suffered several gunshots to her torso. Medical personnel were unable to revive Simjee who died at the scene. It was determined that Hider had attempted to rob Simjee and Paulus at gunpoint and was subsequently shot by Simjee who had a handgun concealed on his person. Hider was transported from the scene by ambulance to a nearby landing zone and airlifted to a Birmingham hospital where she underwent surgery for her injuries.
    ..........
As officers were ordering the female to the ground a 5-year-old child ran from the woods holding a loaded shotgun. Law enforcement told the child to put the shotgun down however the child continued to the female’s location before laying the gun on the ground. The female was taken into custody and later identified as Krystal Pinkins. It was determined that the child was Pinkins’ son. Pinkins was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Department of Human Resources was notified, and they took custody of the child.

I read it. Reminded me of “pay it forward.” Awesome philosophy for life. It’s too bad people in a hurry, usually to just post on message boards, Facebook stuff and work two jobs.
I will do what I can for people, but I just won’t put myself in a compromised situation. For every wonderful heartfelt story like these, there are equally horrific, and tragic stories.

So horrible. And good Lord, the kid in the woods with the shotgun...

My belief is they fully intended to execute them both and take their vehicle based on what they said, the fact that multiple guns and people were present, etc.

One lesson: the guy telling the woman to drop the gun and get on the ground was noble but is likely what got him killed. If you have to pull a gun on someone because they are threatening your life or someone else's, do so knowing that it is your life or theirs and they are going to fight just as hard for theirs as you are for yours. If you have an advantage, take advantage of it while it is there. This ain't the movies or TV. You don't want the fight to be fair. Either fully comply or fully resist. Anything in between is going to get you killed.

I've always told my wife I'd rather leave her with a good story. She gets to tell people her husband died fighting off an anaconda instead of something lame like lung cancer.

I have mentioned the movie “Pay it Forward to my wife.”
She responds with yeah but, “Wrong Turn” 2003.
Then I come back with “It could happen to you.” 1994.
She finishes me off with, what about “The Wicker Man”1973.
