No doubt DeSantis is the best leader we have seen in a long time. The people with means are showing this. We knew Florida was hot before the pandemic. Now it is on fire!

Wealthy Americans are flocking to Florida

They forgot to mention that people are coming to Florida to get far away from the communists that are ruining their states with their crazy-town policies.

It is not close either. Florida is in its own classification. Unfortunately some just don’t have the ability. But this is the definition of what great Leadership is like during a pandemic that had so many disastrous politicization policies put in place.

The crazy thing is even DeSantis failed in the grand scheme by shutting us down for as long as we did. But he was in a tight spot in the beginning and was the first and most adamant proponent for making right what was wrong decisions. Like keeping kids out of school. Like forcing a healthcare provider like us to shut down for 7 weeks.

There is a lot negative about retired rich people flocking to my native Florida. Unchecked development, made possible by the bribery of state and local officials, has ruined it.

Anymore, Florida, like your celebratory post, is superficial.

No income tax and nice weather has been moving folks to Florida, regardless of their income level and who is Governor..

How do you feel about immigrants coming to Texas in mass droves?

While that is off topic and a deflection, the question is fair, so I'll answer it. First, it depends if they're legal or not. If not, I'm against anyone entering the country illegally. If they're legal and inundating Texas, as you imply, and negatively affecting its quality of life, as all the retirees are doing to my state, and if I lived in Texas, I wouldn't like it.

Now perhaps you'll address my point.

My socialist/statist side would say let’s shut our borders down. I hate seeing what is happening along the Turnpike and 75.

But that is not who we should be. And the high income retirees are buying waterfront and are not ones that are blowing up unchecked development. However…The Villages leads the way for most affordable way to retire in Florida.

I fall into the category of who they are describing, but my move had nothing to do with DeSantis or the politics of my former home.

When I moved there in the early 80s, people complained there were 1,000 people a day moving to the state. How many are doing so now? Anyway, glad I left.

    Sorry
I should have put a smiley face. You just sound very much like those that complain about the immigration issues in the south.
As for your point… rampant development is happening everywhere. Visit Huntsville or S Alabama, he’ll even Mississippi is booming with casinos. But Florida has been in a world of it own due to retirement friendly taxes, good weather and still relatively cheap land.
As for the corruption in local government.. nothing new under the sun. Happens in every growing, wealthy state. Democrats or Republicans Lucan’s so it doesn’t bother me.

I love my home state, but I can't say it's the best. I think if Florida had some hills and mountains, it would be hard to beat. What I really prefer about other states is that they feel more organically grown. Streets wind unexpectedly... parks and places of interest appear randomly. Florida can tend to look very planned out. But it's a great place to live, no doubt. Happy to be at least within several hours drive of UF again.

There are many reasons for this but my brother who lives in MA is looking to move to Florida. He says 3 things are killing folks in the Northeast - property taxes, state taxes and every other tax they can add. Florida has very low property taxes, has no state income tax, and there's no taxes on food and medicine.

    This is based on 2018 and 2019 data. That's pre-pandemic and for 2018, pre-DeSantis.

They don’t call it taxachussets for nothing.

FL actually has sort high property taxes though. It’s not even close to a “low tax” state in that regard. The homestead act is there, and that protection might not exist in all states, but lowering taxes on older residents means that burden is shifted to new purchasers at higher tax rates. The main advantage in FL is the no state income tax and the ability to milk tourists for state revenues.
