Now do “they’re sending us their rapists”, “build that wall (and Mexico will pay for it!), “lock her up”, “when the looting starts, the shooting starts”, “stand back, and stand by”, etc etc.

    Totally normal politics?

Lol. Trump is a racist, but that slogan wasnt a shot at Obama's race. It was a shot at liberalism. If Romney ran on that slogan it would be racist too? My point is the SLOGAN wasnt racist.

I and many others have been saying it for months. I believe reason will ultimately prevail, but NOT if the GOP gains control of Congress. I’m praying the voters see the good the Democrats have done since Biden took office and take seriously the danger posed by Trump and his henchmen.

Homophily is leading you to underestimate the percentage that agree with this stuff again. Is there a big push in the suburbs for this sort of thing? No. But there is a reason that certain Republican politicians are starting to back this stuff: it is not an extreme minority position in the Republican party.

The Republican candidate for Senate in Ohio is on the record saying that we are reaching the end of the democratic period in this country and has openly called for a strongman ruler and the Republican candidate for Senate in Arizona has labeled the Unabomber an underrated political thinker. Both won contested primaries this year in highly contested races.

It is the same instinct that cause many suburban Republicans to dismiss the odds of Trump winning the 2016 primary.

I disagree in Trump’s case. I and many other people I know took the phrase in 2015 to mean just what I said it did. Everything since then supports it. You took/take it otherwise. That’s fine.

BTW, I’m not saying all Trump supporters are racist, but am not sure what to call people who tolerate racism. I saw it almost daily in my youth growing up in North Florida - people not speaking out against a blatant wrong.

I have this same conversation with my wife, who on most issues has the same view as I, but she perceives the threat from the left extreme as greater than the right. While I have little patience with the far left, I don’t see a trend to fundamentally do away with democracy. Of course the right extreme doesn’t think they are doing away with democracy. They think they are protecting it. But the practical matter due to their intentionally ill informed views they are working to tear down, and succeeding, our institutions and our rule of law. If the movement goes much further it will be a disaster. Perhaps it fizzles out, or implodes, but I see things getting worse not better.

The crazy left is generally confined to academia and media. To a much lesser degree corporate America. While offputting I don’t see them as a fundamental threat to our democratic foundations, and at this point they don’t even carry the majority of the Democratic Party, where as Republicans are hopelessly locked into Trumpism.

EVERY Trump voter is complicit. There’s no sugar coating it. Not all Trump voters are bright enough to fly away from the bug zapper though. Trump’s “us against them” is intoxicating. It is what it is.

The ones I really blame are the ones smart enough to see it. Ivy League Republican legislators that know what Trumpism is doing to America but don’t see a path to re-election by standing up. So they milk it.

Even smart moderate republicans who would rather watch it burn down feeling political pure rather than support a politician in another party. Those are my real frustrations.

The notion that Democrat are somehow "evil" and "harmful" is a new one, at least in degree. I suspect that has a lot to do with education. The one or two generations after mine just don't seem to appreciate the role both parties have played in shaping our country. They should have learned it at school.

The Democratic party is not, as far as I can tell, any more or less progressive than in previous eras. What has changed - and it began with Newt Gingrich - is the vitriol coming from the right. Democrats have been unfairly demonized, and it's lead to where we are now: Trump and the cowardly Republicans who have failed to stand up to him.

This is a pivotal moment in our history, and were I a Democrat campaigning, that would be my theme.

You have taken evil positions for the support of the fetus over women. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.

Putting party over country during the impeachment trials can't be blown off. The Republicans' cowardice set the stage for Trump's LIES about the election and his on-going efforts to destroy our democracy.

As for "It's loser talk", such loser talk preceded the Jan 6 insurrection. The DOJ and FBI take such loser talk seriously and have ramped up security at federal buildings all over the country.

I acknowledged with some exceptions. Still, the neo-Nazi's, KKK, white supremacists and Confederate flag wavers support Trump.

It definitely doesn’t help things when we resort to ad hominem attacks or making generalizations. It seems that both sides feel like the other side does this to them. Not sure what the answer is. Perhaps, we just ignore the far left and far right and try to meet in the middle.

When Trump loyalists overturn legitimate election results in key states in 2024 and impose Trump on the American people as dictator for life, you will know you were wrong to blow off the threat.

Agree, but those aren’t the only racists. You seem to be focused on white racists, but there are other racists out there.

Plus, there are definitely white racists who vote for Democrats. They aren't as in your face as the KKK, but they exist.

But they are powerful enough to replace even-handed election workers and state officials with Trump loyalists. Why else are they terrorizing election workers and targeting honest Republicans like Raffensperger in Georgia and Bowers in Arizona??? Are you really that blind to what they are doing around the country???

This may be hard to believe, but I am NOT far left. I have no affection for the squad or Bernie. I am a left-center moderate, more moderate on the economy and more progressive on social issues. I've watched the pendulum swing from left to right to left to right for decades without fear that we would lose our democracy. Until now . . . .

Trump has bullied the cowardly GOP into submission. They've had chances to stop this authoritarian, who serves no one but himself, but chose to keep themselves in power over the future of our democracy. This is NOT hyperbole. Trump has learned from his failure to overturn the 2020 election and is actively setting up the means to be successful in 2024. It's there for all to see.

How do you meet in the middle when one side is actively trying to overthrow our democracy? Please! No false equivalencies that both sides are doing it!
